Departmental Overview

International House:
International House is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, self-supporting residential and community-oriented program center affiliated with the University of California Berkeley and located in the southeast quadrant of the Berkeley Campus. Since its founding in 1930 with a gift from John D. Rockefeller, Jr., it has housed more than 90,000 residents including two Governors of California and eight Nobel Prize laureates. Its mission is to foster intercultural respect and understanding among people throughout the world across cultural, economic, and ethnic lines. I-House provides nearly 1,100 students and scholars from the United States and around the world with an opportunity to live and learn together during a typical 12 month cycle. I-House's rich array of programs serves the residents, the campus and local community.Responsibilities

Examples of Duties:
  • Conducts daily and continuous inspection of the building to monitor for timely and efficient repairs as needed. Plans, directs, supervises and coordinates the work activities of support staff. Delegates and schedules work orders for efficient and cost effective productivity to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction
  • Troubleshoots complaints and directly oversees and manages activities related to skilled crafts and trades, including, but not limited to the following: steam heating and other heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), boiler operations, electrical, machinist, sheet metal, abatement and insulation, structural (carpentry, painting, roofing, glazer, and blinds), plumbing or other skilled crafts and trades.
  • Develops and maintains performance metrics and standards to ensure excellent service is extended to building, residents and guests. Ensures that maintenance/cleaning issues are handled expeditiously, and that service calls (routine or emergency), are handled in accordance with established procedures. Continually monitors and assesses customer satisfaction with maintenance services.
  • Administers the Maintenance Management Software system (WebTMA). Provides oversight for planning, maintenance and upgrades of trades' maintenance shop to ensure staff have appropriate resources. Purchases all supplies for building maintenance (some offsite trips required).
  • Develops and maintains performance metrics and standards to ensure excellent service is extended to building, residents and guests. Ensures that maintenance/cleaning issues are handled expeditiously, and that service calls (routine or emergency), are handled in accordance with established procedures. Continually monitors and assesses customer satisfaction with maintenance services.
  • Effectively monitors the performance of staff in accordance with established policies and procedures, including completing performance evaluations. Defines and sets work schedules and project priorities; participates in the selection, training and supervision of staff. Supervises one (1) Custodial Supervisor, eleven (11) Custodians and three (3) Carpenters


Required Qualifications

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Five (5) years of experience minimum in facilities work.
  • Extensive personnel management experience at department head level
  • Must possess a valid California Class C driver license at the time and for the duration of appointment.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive Criminal Background Check.
  • Experience in the hospitality industry a plus
  • Steam system experience a plus
  • Project Management experience or training a plus

  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures;
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural diverse environment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The incumbent will have a proven track record demonstrating the following:

  • Working knowledge of policies and procedures relative to facilities maintenance, equipment, customer service, dispatch, building maintenance, safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including active listening, critical thinking, and ability to multi-task effectively, persuasion/negotiation, mentoring, leadership/supervision, problem solving, operations analysis and quality control analysis.
  • Working knowledge in supervising facility maintenance personnel and improvements along with building maintenance work to include one or more of the following: basic plumbing and pipefitting, carpentry, painting and plastering, service of machinery, electrical maintenance and custodial.
  • Advanced skills in working collaboratively and influencing others to enhance business processes and overall facilities condition.
  • Advanced knowledge and skill regarding specialized facilities needs in space planning and advanced skill to effectively translate needs to professional architects and engineers.
  • Advanced skills to assess processes or services to make improvements and in project management.
  • Advanced skill to multi-task and effectively prioritize large project work.
  • Advanced skills in management, regulatory compliance and operations planning
  • Administrative, Financial and Computer skills to manage budgets, understand and achieve financial targets, review and monitor timesheets, performance evaluations, review/track/monitor work orders, administration of the preventive and predictive maintenance program, maintain library of facilities systems and equipment.

Salary Range: Minimum - $4,591.67 - Midpoint - $84,000
