Organizational Unit Overview

The Office of Online Learning, Academic Outreach, and Academic Innovation is a multifaceted office within the university engaging with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. The office respects, understands and responds to the unique demands of all types of learners and is committed to ensuring access, engagement, and success for those learners. The office supports the university in its leadership role in the areas of distance and technology enhanced learning, both in our region and beyond. The educational and economic development of the citizens of its service area is a focal point for the office. The office conducts its activities in partnership with all units of the university and encompasses distance and online education, National Council State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements, Experiential Learning Inventory (ELI), the ECU Proctoring Center, the Testing Center, and Military Outreach. Additionally, the office serves as the centerpiece of ECU’s Collaborative for Online Learning, a campus-wide network of services and supports that provide points of access and engagement for both students and faculty in the online learning space with the stated end goal of ensuring success of all in the university online ecosystem.

Job Duties

The Executive Director will provide strategic and innovative leadership and will oversee operational management for the Office of Online Learning, Academic Outreach, and Academic Innovation. The person in this position directs staff of the programs that operate within the office: distance education (including the ECU Collaborative for Online Learning and ECU Online), DOE state authorization reciprocity agreements, Experiential Learning Inventory (ELI), testing center, ECU proctoring center, military outreach and the East Carolina University/North Carolina State University Gateway Technology Center Collaborative in Rocky Mount, NC. The office also supports a significant number of off-model, receipts-based programs.

The Executive Director of Online Learning, Academic Outreach, and Academic Innovation will be responsible for the coordination of the ECU Collaborative for Online Learning (CfOL). In this role, the Executive Director will help develop, revise, and communicate a vision for the CfOL to both internal and external stakeholders. They will be responsible for ensuring that the CfOL aligns with the university’s mission and satisfies the strategic directions of the institution in areas related to online learning. As leader of the CfOL, they will work with various campus and external partners to ensure the leveraging of expertise around the needs of both online instructors and online learners. They will provide leadership for innovative and entrepreneurial endeavors related to the CfOL and will forge partnerships with internal and external entities to realize those endeavors. They will be responsible for working with the various spheres of interaction within the CfOL to facilitate program development, project management of campus-wide online learning efforts, and overall evaluation of the various elements of the CfOL.

Leadership (40%)

  • Develop and communicate a vision for the office, unifying the various entities within the unit around that common vision.

  • Identify strategic directions for the office and implement a plan for realizing the goals of those strategic opportunities.

  • Provide thoughtful leadership for the university in areas related to the office including, but not limited to, online learning and distance education, military outreach and engagement, state authorization, and testing and proctoring services.

  • Provide visionary and operational leadership for and coordinate activities associated with the ECU Collaborative for Online Learning.

  • Directly supervise Business Office, Testing Services, Associate Director of Credit Programs, Military Outreach and administrative assistant to Executive Director.

Collaboration (30%)

  • Connect the various elements of the office to a broad range of stakeholders both on and off campus.

  • Provide and nurture an innovative and entrepreneurial environment within the office and with partners that will allow the university to respond to present and future challenges and opportunities, particularly in the credit-bearing learning space.

  • Represent the university as a voting member on the Gateway Technology Center Board.

  • Represent the university as a member of the UNC Online Leadership Collaborative.

  • Attend University Council, Distance Education and Learning Technology meetings and other designated committee meetings as assigned by the Vice Provost.

Coordination (30%)

  • Coordinate the various entities within the office.

  • Oversee the fiscal management of the office, to include identifying priorities for expenditures.

  • Develop educational initiatives at the Gateway Technology Center, located in Rocky Mount.

This position is contingent upon available funding.



Minimum Education/Experience

  • A Master’s degree in a related academic discipline.

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in working within an online/distance education setting.

  • Experience in leadership and/or management of online/distance education programming.

  • Experience in leading collaborative projects.
