*Position Summary **
The Assistant Director of Graduate Student Life is responsible for a broad range of programs and services that contribute to our vibrant graduate student community and ensure a high-quality experience for Stevens large and diverse graduate student population. The Assistant Director will work closely and collaboratively with colleagues in Graduate Admissions, Graduate Academics & Student Success, the Career Center, and other units. The Assistant Director will develop, implement, and manage programs and services that support students’ development. This will include advising the Graduate Student Council (GSC) and graduate student organizations; developing and implementing co-curricular programming for graduate students; managing airport pickup and temporary housing services for new graduate students; and leading efforts to communicate with and engage graduate students through social media and the weekly Graduate Student Life Newsletter. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Graduate Student Life and may supervise graduate interns and/or student workers. 

*Primary Responsibilities**

Student Organization Advisement: Serve as an advisor to the Graduate Student Council (GSC) and other graduate student organizations. This will include ensuring appropriate representation of graduate student interests; working with graduate student leaders to guide and support them in their efforts to plan and execute programs, including large-scale events and campus traditions; advising student organizations on university policy, especially pertaining to event planning, budgeting, publicity, and risk management; and intentionally designing and implementing opportunities for graduate student leaders to engage in leadership development.

  • Co-Curricular Programming: Lead the development and implementation of a broad range of co-curricular programs to support graduate students’ social engagement, personal growth, and professional development. This will include planning and managing a comprehensive set of programs for graduate students (including stand alone and multi-session programs) and assessing such programs. Special attention should be paid to leadership development and community-building programs, especially for underrepresented populations. 
  • Annual Events: Plan and execute annual campus-wide events, activities, and traditions with students and campus partners, including the Graduate Gala, Graduate Student Appreciation Week, and IntroDucktion. Assist with the coordination of annual events including Orientation, Welcome Week, Convocation, the Graduate Research Conference, the Graduate Student Awards Ceremony, the Ph.D. Hooding Ceremony, and Commencement. 
  • Airport Pickup and Temporary Housing: Manage the university’s Airport Pickup and Temporary Housing services each semester. This will include working with campus partners and external service providers to select dates and negotiate contracts; promoting these services to accepted students through our website, mailings, and yielding events; and managing student registrations and payments.  
  • Communications and Social Media: Work with the Manager of Communications & Marketing to develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy to effectively engage graduate students. This will include creating a communications calendar; developing marketing materials; creating and distributing the Graduate Student Life Newsletter each week; and managing relevant social media channels. 
  • SAGE: Contribute to the revival and ongoing success of the Stevens American Graduate Experience (SAGE) summer program. This will include redesigning the program with input from relevant stakeholders; creating new promotional materials; advertising the program to admitted students; managing registrations; hiring and training graduate intern(s) and student staff; and supervising the coordination of all program logistics. 
  • New Student Orientation: Assist the Associate Director with the planning, design, and execution of all graduate student orientation efforts. This will include recruiting, training, and supervising Orientation Leaders; communicating with admitted and students about policies, procedures, programs, and services; designing and leading online and on-campus programs, events, and activities; and coordinating with internal and external service providers who are involved with graduate student orientation.

*Qualifications **

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, or a related field preferred. 
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a university setting, ideally in student life. 
  • Working knowledge of theories of student engagement, student development, and leadership development. 
  • Strong organizational skills along with the ability to thoughtfully balance conflicting priorities. 
  • Proven ability to effectively manage time and tasks to meet varying deadlines. 
  • Effective and professional communication skills (email, phone, and in person). 
  • Confident, mature, competent, and professional demeanor. 
  • Ability to establish relationships with a diverse population of graduate students. 
  • Ability to provide on-site supervision for student events and activities, including evening and weekend hours, as needed.
