University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) builds Berkeley's excellence and character by strengthening relations with alumni, parents, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley, and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development offices by partnering with campus fundraisers. It handles a range of central activities and services, encompassing events, communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, database management, and more. In this context, we are seeking a senior principal gifts officer to join the Principal Gifts & Strategic Initiatives team within UDAR.
Principal Gifts & Strategic Initiatives - Overview
The Principal Gifts and Strategic Initiatives (PGSI) team works with members of the campus community to maximize complex, lifelong relationships between principal gift donors and Berkeley. By doing so, we help the world's leading philanthropists achieve their dreams through partnerships with the University, and we help make Berkeley's highest aspirations possible.
Last year, Berkeley raised a record $569 million in private support from 108,000 individual gifts. As we look to the future and a new campaign, it is now more important than ever to build life-long relationships with alumni and friends who have the passion, dedication, and capacity to make a transformational impact at Berkeley through involvement and philanthropy. Reporting to the Executive Director, Principal Gifts & Strategic Initiatives, the Senior Director of Development position is an opportunity for a seasoned professional to join a team of leaders in principal giving at Berkeley.
- Exercising a high level of independent judgment, serves as an expert development professional in the area of principal gifts, leading strategies that include highly complex gift discussions and interaction with donors capable of making significant contributions to the campus
- Manage a portfolio of 40-60 principal gift donor prospects with the capacity to give $5 million or greater, with a particular focus of those who may give $10 million+
- Drive and manage strategic, consistent, personalized engagement with donors, including meaningful interaction with Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost, Vice Chancellors, Deans and other academic leaders, faculty, and lead campus supporters and volunteers
- Build effective relationships and cultivation strategies to deeply engage donors in the University's mission and priorities with a goal of securing support at $5 million+ level
- Lead proactive collaborative efforts to develop effective and coordinated strategies for prospects shared by more than one academic unit; facilitate action plans and monitor implementation of strategies Create and execute events and activities for cultivation, stewardship, and solicitations to advance principal gifts
- Prepare and present formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects; or prepare senior campus leaders to present proposals Ensure that proposals are well crafted, drawing on support from in-house communications team and gaining sign-off from relevant academic leaders
- Ensure that gifts are well-stewarded, drawing on campus partners for appropriate, timely, and consistent recognition, and ensure that all appropriate reporting and documentation is undertaken
- Contribute to the identification and refinement of compelling gift opportunities to connect principal gift donors' interests with the University's highest priorities and strategic initiatives
- Meet pre-determined goals and objectives established annually with the Executive Director, Principal Gifts & Strategic Initiatives
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following abilities:
- At least 8-10 years of progressive fundraising experience managing current and prospective donors at the principal and major gift level (seven figure and above)
- Demonstrated experience in building and managing a prospect portfolio; ability and sophistication to effectively advance gift discussions and close multi-million dollar gifts
- Demonstrated experience leading complex gift strategies and negotiations in collaboration with institutional executives and lead volunteers
- Expert knowledge of how to research, qualify, and cultivate new donor prospects
- Understanding of operating, capital and endowment fund development
- Ability to thrive in a high-stakes, fast-paced environment while effectively executing a range of principal gifts plans and programs
- Goal and outcomes orientation
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
Communication & Collaboration
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, instincts, discretion and judgment
- Expert communication, analytical, and organizational skills; keen attention to detail and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Expertise in developing persuasive communication materials from diverse written, oral and primary source information
- Ambition and motivation that values a collaborative working environment and ability to establish strong interpersonal relationships with academic leaders, faculty, donors, peers, and other staff
- Commitment to higher education and an understanding and/or experience working within the environment of a large, public research university
- Advanced Degree and/or CFRE a plus
