Ko wai mātou? – Who are we?
We are proud of our Joint Institute at Zhejiang University City College which is designated as an Institute authorised to deliver NZ (University of Waikato) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited degrees. Currently the Institute offers undergraduate degrees in Media, Design and Finance. All teaching is conducted in English. Into its fifth year of operation, the Institute in Hangzhou has 16 staff and an enrolment of just under 1,000 students.
Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role
The position is somewhat unique in that it straddles two Senior Leadership teams; one at the joint institute in Hangzhou and one at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.
The position provides overall leadership in conjunction with the Executive Deputy Dean NZUWI, and the University of Waikato’s Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and International Office staff, to create a profitable and harmonious working environment between the two Universities.
The primary responsibility of this position is to provide leadership to the University of Waikato staff based at the Institute within a multicultural environment which will require an understanding of Chinese and Western cultures. In addition, the position will have academic responsibility for the University of Waikato programmes taught at the Institute. This includes oversight of the day-to-day teaching responsibilities as well as monitoring the quality assurance of the three degrees. This leadership position actively manages change, incorporating key initiatives from the strategies and other organisational actions required to achieve the goals of both Universities.
The successful candidate may be required to contribute to tutoring or teaching in one of the programmes.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD, ideally in a subject area taught or the English language programme, and have at least five years demonstrated successful experience in academic leadership with acute business acumen and understanding of organisational issues and challenges. You will have experience of living and working in China or an Asian Country, with an understanding for the Asian culture and the Chinese tertiary educational system. You will be a natural leader and contribute your knowledge, advice and support on people-oriented change management practices that improve communications, maximise staff individual performance, develop high performance teams, and identify and proactively manage risk.

If New Zealand border restrictions are lifted by the time of the appointment, it is envisaged the appointee will travel to the University of Waikato in New Zealand for professional development before starting at NZUWI. There will be further trips to the University of Waikato in New Zealand for ongoing professional development.
Current salary range will be in the range of CNY530,000 to CNY630,00 per annum dependent on qualifications, skills and experience.
It is envisaged the position will commence in China in September 2022 or January 2023. The appointment will be as a foreign expert, with employment compliant with the regulations of the provincial government. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment as a foreign expert with regard to obtaining work permits and visas.
