Departmental Overview
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is charged with providing an equitable opportunity for every applicant to obtain admission to the University. The department must operate in a professional manner that ensures positive staff morale, values hard work and dedication, and in which staff communicate and collaborate effectively. Furthermore it must also present a coordinated effort to standardize procedures, document best practices, offer a variety of methods for professional development, as well as providing first-class customer service.

This position serves as the Deputy Director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The position achieves departmental goals through managing the work of others. The Deputy Director oversees daily operations, supervises other managers, reports directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Director for Undergraduate Admissions, and serves in place of the AVC/Director when they are unavailable.

This position oversees managers and professional positions in charge of the following operational areas: freshman evaluation, transfer evaluation, community relations; finalization, and training. The Deputy Director determines goals and performance expectations of direct reports. Makes recommendations concerning improvements of functional areas to director and operates in a highly professional manner that ensures positive staff morale and models hard work and dedication. The incumbent should communicate and collaborate effectively, will coordinate efforts to standardize procedures and reduce inefficient operations, offer a variety of methods for professional development, and manage achievement of goals in a cost-effective and transparent manner. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions has as its foundation to provide a full and fair review for all applicants to obtain undergraduate admission to the University.

  • Serves as an informational resource to the Admissions, Enrollment and Preparatory Education Committee (AEPE) and the Student Athlete Admissions Committee (SAAC). Meets athletic admissions goals and compliance with established athletics admissions policies through managing the work of a senior assistant director of athletic admissions and other admissions specialists.
  • Represents offices when speaking to college/school/department or campus as it relates Finalization of admit records, transcripts, and test scores. Supervise and serve as resource for managers who review difficult and complex admissions cases, including Admissions Review processes in the ARC process for Finalization.
  • Holds full supervisory responsibility for 3-5 FTE, including managerial positions, and indirect supervision of over 175 freshman and transfer external readers. Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff. Ensures that managers are meeting departmental objectives, business needs, and compliance with University, campus and departmental policies.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing budgets for managed functions. Shares management responsibility with the Director for a $8.3M budget. Provides leadership and direction in human resources and budget matters for OUA.
  • Represents the office in the absence of the Director. In consultation with the Director, makes decisions and commitments on behalf of the office. Participates in various systemwide and campus policy-making committees and holds authority to make binding decisions for the Berkeley campus. Participates in state and national committees of professional associations. Serves as a member of the OUA Management Team.
  • Responsible for maintaining and enhancing systems that support the program(s). Collaborates with the Associate Director for Systems to maintain/develop/update/implement systems that support the mission and that might enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of OUA's operation. Keeps abreast of new technologies.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of education theory, policy, practice, evaluation, and K-14 issues in higher education.
  • Must have prior experience supervising full-time professional staff.
  • Significant knowledge of evaluation methodologies, data analysis procedures, and systems necessary for working with technical staff to develop effective data management and evaluation systems.
  • Significant knowledge of the goals and mission of the University as they relate to academic preparation, recruitment, and advanced-standing admission.
  • Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Pacific-10 Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of fiscal management policies and practices and University personnel management policies and practices.
  • Knowledge of organizational development strategies and practice.
  • State, federal laws and University policies governing the disclosure of student information.
  • Enrollment planning/management, statistics, quantitative analysis and research methodology.
  • Knowledgeable about large, complex computer systems, technology and information management.
  • Political acumen; ability to work well and build relationships with a wide range of internal and external partners
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Salary & Benefits
Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is $100,000 - $132,000/annually.
