The Office of the Provost is responsible for setting and guiding institutional and budgetary priorities that advance the University’s academic mission. Together with Provosts and senior administrators, the Provost directs and supports the partnerships, collaborations and planning initiatives on three Massachusetts campuses and an international center in Talloires, France. This team of academic leaders ensures that educational and research programs are of the highest quality by working closely with faculty, staff, alumni, and students to fulfill the University’s goals and aspirations. The Office of the Provost is also responsible for the library system, international and industry collaborations and the ten Boards of Advisors.

What You'll Do

The Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion cultivates and executes key strategic priorities for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ). Supports, guides, and coordinates DEIJ efforts, activities, and policies across all of Tufts campuses. DEIJ includes both antiracism and antisemitism as well as a broad understanding of diversity.


The Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion:


  • Serves as a member of the Provost’s senior leadership team.
  • Provides vision, leadership, and oversight of the faculty, staff, and student experience. Oversees school-to-school coordination of DEIJ efforts.
  • Oversees faculty and staff DEIJ programming. Guides student DEIJ programming and sets standards of excellence for integrating DEIJ practices, pedagogy, and content in academic programs throughout the university.
  • Plays an integral role in faculty and staff recruitment, hiring, and retention, tenure and promotion, and compensation strategies and plans.
  • Provides guidance to enrollment managers on matters related to successful recruitment, retention, and enrollment strategies for students from diverse populations.  
  • Ensures measurable accountability for implementation of the anti-racist institution initiative and other DEIJ initiatives / workstreams. Liaises with governance and accountability structures for DEIJ (e.g. DILC, Senior Leadership Anti-Racism Advisory Group, TUCDEI, etc.)
  • Serves as the university spokesperson on matters related to DEIJ.
  • Directs assigned functional area. Ensures leadership plans are developed, manages performance and facilitates development of staff.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:


  • Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of advanced degree and 10 years of related experience
  • Experience in a strategic leadership role in higher education or related setting
  • Expertise in diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and anti-racism theory and organizational change management
  • Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in reshaping policies, procedures, and organizational structures to advance institutional / organizational diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice goals
  • Proven ability to work in an inclusive, proactive, values-driven and consultative way with faculty, staff, peers, students, parents, and the broader external community
  • Proven ability to relate to a variety of constituencies, including students, parents, faculty, community groups and alumni, and to appreciate the interests and concerns of each group
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and negotiation skills, as well as political acumen
  • Ability to influence people, solve problems, trouble shoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts
  • Expert analytical and problem-solving skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated change management and high-level leadership experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated experience in community engagement
