This position advances UIC’s commitment to equity by fostering a more diverse and inclusive learning and working environment at UI Health. The Director of DEI reports to both the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Engagement (VCDEE) and the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs (VCHA). The Director of DEI works closely with the Office of the VCDEE, the Office of the VCHA, the health sciences colleges, and other UI Health units to focus on anti-racism and social justice initiatives related to faculty, student and staff recruitment and retention, programming, training, curricular design, and professional development among the academic healthcare delivery enterprise.
Responsibilities include the following:
• Support the VCHA and VCDEE and collaborate with the health sciences associate deans for diversity (and equivalents) in the development, implementation, and assessment of initiatives that cultivate a more diverse and inclusive environment for health professions faculty, staff, and students.
• Guide and monitor progress on the VCHA Health Sciences Colleges Anti-Racism Initiatives plan.
• Work closely on the Advancing Racial Equity plans with health sciences associate deans for diversity and others, helping to create an accountability process while advising and supporting the VCHA and the VCDEE in evaluating ARE progress in the health sciences colleges.
• Map and assess existing DEI education and training initiatives within the UI Health enterprise, identifying key needs and gaps to inform the creation of an overarching DEI strategy.
• Collaborate with VCDEE Diversity Education to develop DEI training programs and workshops, including Intergroup Dialogue and other professional development, integrating existing programs and models when appropriate.
• In collaboration with the health sciences faculty and CATE (Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence), support initiatives to incorporate DEI into curriculum (e.g. anti-racism, social justice, health disparities, power differentials and hierarchies, etc.).
• Supervise the preparation of reports and dashboard summaries working with VCDEE and VCHA communications staff.
• Represent the VCHA on the Campus Bias Reporting Tool Committee and, in collaboration with the VCDEE, VCHA and other appropriate units, address bias incidents in the health sciences colleges and other UI Health settings.
• Supervise and manage Associate Director for duties related to student programming and west campus DEI initiatives.
• Manage unit budget and resource allocation.
• Represent the VCDEE or VCHA on committees or in meetings when needed.
• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Masters degree required, terminal degree preferred (PhD or clinical).
A minimum of 5 years of experience contributing and helping develop a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
Demonstrated experience fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in a health sciences academic and/or clinical setting. Prior experience in a large complex higher education or health care organization. Ability to navigate and professionally interact with all levels of institutional hierarchy
Knowledge of current trends and pedagogy in DEI education
Demonstrated experience managing people and projects.
Knowledge of the various techniques for successfully disseminating information through various channels of communication.
Demonstrated ability to comfortably engage across organizational and cultural boundaries
Excellent interpersonal skills and highly attuned emotional intelligence with the ability to interact effectively with a broad range of diverse individuals to maintain good working relationships across the University
Strong commitment to ethics, social justice, and advancing institutional values
Strong written and oral communication skills
Strong presentation skills
Preferred qualifications:
Ability to research, identify and implement emerging best practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion programming.
Teaching experience.
Research experience.
Ability to work successfully in a remote and in-person environment.
Accredited certification in mediation, intergroup dialogue, and/or restorative justice.
