Overview

The European Center is Tufts University’s campus in Talloires, France. Between May and September, the European Center offers international academic programs for all learners: college undergraduates, high school students, alumni and adult learners. Current programs include:

  • Tufts in Talloires: A 6-week summer study abroad program open to undergraduate students from Tufts and other universities
  • Tufts in Annecy: A summer program in partnership with CILFA (Centre International de Langue Française d'Annecy), an institute that specializes in teaching French as a second language to students over the age of 18. 
  • Tufts Summit: A summer program focused on international relations and French language studies for rising high school juniors and seniors

 

In addition, The European Center hosts a variety of international conferences, all of which address our mission of facilitating and promoting international understanding.


What You'll Do

This position requires working onsite on the Talloires, France campus from May - September annually. 

 

The European Center seeks an Assistant Director who will manage our portfolio of international academic programs. Our ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about international education and will bring new ideas to our team. Although the Assistant Director will be based in Medford, MA, this position requires an annual 12-week summer residency at the Tufts European Center in Talloires, France.

 

The Assistant Director will manage all student-facing aspects of the European Center’s international education activities, as well as support the day-to-day operation of the Tufts European Center in Talloires.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

 

  • Oversee all aspects involved in delivering high quality academic programs
  • Collaborate with key units at Tufts to ensure successful program delivery, including Tufts Global Education, Department of Student Affairs, University College, International Safety and Security, Global Operations, Registrar, Bursar, Financial Aid, Student Services and Academic Departments
  • Manage relationships with French vendors, neighbors, host families and other support teams
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for creating and delivering faculty-led programs in Talloires, in coordination with Tufts Global Education
  • Manage StudioAbroad (Terra Dotta) implementation and daily use

Work with students and their families to troubleshoot issues (i.e., academic, personal, emotional, social, etc.) as they arise

  • Plan and implement program elements for existing and future international academic programs, including:
    • Establishing program calendars
    • Planning and executing a marketing strategy for attracting a strong and diverse group of students
    • Managing program application and course enrollment in StudioAbroad (Terra Dotta)
    • Planning and implementing pre-departure communications for students
    • Planning and implementing pre-departure orientation sessions, in coordination with Tufts Global Education
    • Developing and managing on-site orientation program
    • Developing and implementing on-site support systems for students/staff/emergencies procedures
    • Facilitating host family relationships and student assignments, including host family orientation
    • Planning and managing extracurricular and community-oriented program activities in France
    • Communicating regularly with students c during and after the program, as well as with French host families
  • Represent The European Center at BASAA, NAFSA and other international education conferences and events, as appropriate
    • Coordinate summer staff recruitment and hiring and train, supervise and support summer intern staff
    • Administer and analyze student evaluations to identify areas for improvements
    • Participate in day to day management and security of the Tufts facilities in Talloires
    • Serve as emergency on-call contact for program participants in the absence of the Director
    • Ensure continued office functions in the absence of the Director


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • French language fluency
  • Understanding of the principles of diversity and inclusion in an international setting
  • Experience living outside of the United States, preferably in France
  • 3-5 years experience in education abroad or student affairs, preferably with college students
  • Superior writing skills in English and French
  • Computer/technical literacy
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Willingness and ability to spend at least 12 weeks annually living in Talloires, France
  • Demonstrated international student affairs experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Experience with Studio Abroad (Terra Dotta) software
