University of Doha invites applications for the position of Vice President, Applied Research and Graduate Studies.   This position requires a candidate who will be proven leader with the skills and expertise necessary to support UDST in fully implementing its mission and vision.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the President, the Vice President, Applied Research & Graduate Studies will provide strategic leadership to advance applied research initiatives in a range of disciplines of direct relevance to solving issues of concern to industry, government, and society, thereby driving academic excellence, research innovation and contributing to the social and economic growth of the state of Qatar.

The successful candidate will provide Strategic support in the formulation of UDST’s strategy and lead the development and implementation of Applied Research and Graduate Studies Division business plan in alignment with UDST’s strategy through its initiatives and projects.   This will include overseeing and managing business planning, project development, innovation, and technology transfer research initiatives at UDST; identify various sources of research funding and develop strategies to obtain such funds and support the UDST research community.

The successful candidate will oversee the review and approval of all graduate research projects while ensuring quality standards are met across all graduate programs including accreditations and assessments; and communicate the accomplishments of applied research activities at UDST through seminars, publications, news to outreach to the wider academic and industry communities and maximize impact of graduate studies.

The successful candidate will promote effective infrastructure to provide support and guidance to university researchers on an array of services in terms of funding opportunities, establishing research partnerships locally and internationally and promote the result of the research.

The successful candidate will be the liaison between the UDST research community and Qatar’s government, industry, and other sectors to foster relationships that innovatively problem solve for local community and industry, as well as promote UDST student involvement in research activities with applied research as a vehicle for developing student research skills and workplace readiness.

The successful candidate will administer research projects and contracts to ensure fiscal responsibility and timely and accurate delivery of results.  This includes overseeing the preparation and management of budgets and liaising with external funding agencies to promote research funding opportunities to student and employee researchers.

The successful candidate will manage the organization and vetting of research proposals and allocation of Applied Research funds in line with relevant policies and procedures and devise an assessment of university activities contributing to local and broader economic, social, and environmental objectives while devising methods for measuring their impact.

The successful candidate will establish partnerships with appropriate industry, business, agency, and government representatives in collaboration with the UDST’s Committees and Colleges to promote innovation, research and job creation fostering economic development.

The successful candidate will develop, implement, and ensure compliance with relevant external applied research policies and procedures including ethics reviews and grant compliance reviews and lead in the policy development initiatives and implementation thereof for Applied Research and Graduate Studies Division.  This will include managing the development and monitoring the implementation of procedures, processes, guidelines governing Applied Research and Graduate Studies Division

The successful candidate will develop and monitor the annual budget of the Applied Research and Graduate Studies Division and monitor the performance of Applied Research and Graduate Studies Division vis-à-vis established KPIs on a regular basis.

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the manpower resources for Applied Research and Graduate Studies Division, ensuring direct subordinates are fully supported through periodic performance reviews and provided with professional development.

Qualifications

Education:

An earned PhD, awarded from an accredited institution in an appropriate field such as Engineering, Business, or Health Sciences is required.

Experience:

  • A distinguished record of applied research and a reasonable list of publications in internationally recognized journals.
  • Extraordinary communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a high level of professional integrity, accountability, enthusiasm, inclusivity, and sense of goodwill.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in a similar leadership position, at a university or college campus undergoing rapid growth and development.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with university administrators, faculty, students, and staff.
  • Experience with reviewing and/ or facilitating the review of faculty promotion portfolios.

Significant experience in building and sustaining highly productive leadership teams, and inspiring others to achieve excellence.
