The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), the largest public comprehensive research university in the Kansas City metropolitan area and one of four institutions of the University of Missouri System, invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost. Serving as the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs the Provost will play and integral role in providing the vision, experience, and energy to lead the institution in its academic mission, to engage in vital research and scholarship, effective teaching, student access and student success, as well as impactful engagement with citizens of the Kansas City region, Missouri, and beyond. The university is primed to bring in a collaborative, strategic, and inclusive leader with the fundamental desire to engage and connect with faculty, students, staff, donors, and partners to deliver a compelling shared vision to elevate UMKC to the next level.
Led by over 670 diverse full-time faculty members across 14 schools and colleges, UMKC offers a broad array of traditional and interdisciplinary programs ranging from medicine to the performing arts. The University enrolls more than 16,000 students, coming from 48 states and more than 95 countries, in more than 125 academic areas.
UMKC, chartered in 1929, started focusing on its mission as an urban-serving university in 1953 and has since then become a globally oriented, metropolitan, teaching and research institution that provides comprehensive disciplinary and interdisciplinary education, community leadership, and collaboration. Today, UMKC is on a new trajectory, establishing itself as a human-centric, community-engaged, research-intensive university. The next Provost will build on stable, long-standing civic and corporate community partnerships but will also inherit excellent opportunities to further advance community engagement and philanthropy.
Reporting directly to Chancellor C. Mauli Agrawal, the Provost will set an example of respect for the constituents of the university, holding the institution as a whole to the highest standards of conduct. The Provost serves as the Chief Academic Officer and senior member of the Chancellor’s leadership team responsible for implementing the University’s vision while ensuring academic excellence; maintaining growth in external funding for research and outreach; drive various initiatives regarding student success and retention; and providing synergy to support the University’s urban mission through work with its academic units, centers, institutes and professional programs. Further the future Provost will engage and partner with University of Missouri System leadership and serve as a strong advocate for UMKC.
The Provost will emphasize transformational pedagogy, co-curricular opportunities, and research-infused learning as drivers of student access and success, and will help UMKC’s talented leaders to envision new conduits for collaboration within and outside academia, with the goal of safeguarding and enhancing the student experience. The Provost will look to build upon the existing traditions, leverage the vibrant, diverse, and international distinctiveness of the campus community, and strengthen the university’s advancement efforts. UMKC has developed and adopted a transformative, collaborative, and transparent Strategic Plan. This new plan provides the Provost an incredible opportunity to lead the great work that is already happening at UMKC each day, and to further its relationships with the communities, industry, and broader populations.
