Primary Function
The Northern Illinois University Libraries seeks a highly engaged and innovative individual to serve as the Associate Dean for Collections Management. Reporting to the Dean of the University Libraries, the incumbent is a member of the Management Team which shares responsibility for libraries’ budget planning, policy implementation and strategic initiatives.

The Collections Management Division is composed of three departments, the heads of which report to the Associate Dean: Digital Scholarship, Distinctive Collections and Technical Services. Digital Scholarship includes digitization and scholarly communication efforts, and the NIU institutional repository (the Huskie Commons). Technical Services comprises three units: Acquisitions & Vendor Relations; Cataloging & Records Management; and Preservation, Gifts & Exchanges. Distinctive Collections comprises six units: Rare Books and Special Collections; the Donn V. Hart Southeast Asia Collection; the Music Library; the Faraday Library; Government Publications; and Regional History & University Archives. Comprised of eight tenure track library faculty, an SPS and 25 operating staff, the division also includes graduate assistants and student employees.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
- Participates in the overall operation of the University Libraries, in particular through participation in the Management Team
- Works closely with the Associate Dean for Facilities, Finance and Technology and the Associate Dean for Public Services
- Manages the expenditures of a $3.7 million annual collections budget
- Focuses on achieving the most effective and efficient management of University Libraries’ collections in support of the curriculum and research needs of both NIU and the greater community
- Gathers and analyzes metrics related to the collections as needed, and makes evidence-based decisions and recommendations
- Interprets and applies policies and procedures, and suggests and/or makes changes as appropriate
- Maintains open communication channels and fosters a collegial environment in which employees freely exchange ideas both within and outside the division
- Serves as ex-officio on committees and represents the Dean and/or Libraries at meetings and gatherings
- Maintains confidentiality associated with managing personnel and other sensitive information
- Fulfills requirements of faculty status at the level of Associate Professor through contributions to librarianship, scholarship and service
- Encourages faculty and staff training, identifies resources for professional development and provides mentoring through tenure and promotion for library faculty

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position
- A Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program and an additional advanced degree
- Demonstrated scholarship appropriate to appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher
- Minimum of five years’ experience in an academic library/research institution, with three years or more at a supervisory level
- Demonstrated knowledge of the various processes associated with the acquisition, organization and discovery of library collections

Education and Experience Preferred
- Familiarity with the Alma cloud-based Integrated Library System
- Experience with data-driven collection analysis
- Ability to balance innovative trends in libraries with the need for consistent and predictable practices
- Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of academic library personnel and processes
- Demonstrated ability to complete time-sensitive and complex projects
- Strong communication skills
