The Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) provides strategic leadership and management of all aspects of the human resources function with the goal of advancing Mines’ workforce. Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Administration and Operations (EVP), the Chief Human Resources Officer works collaboratively across campus by guiding the development and implementation of innovative and comprehensive human resource strategy in support of the Mines vision and mission.
Working across the university, the CHRO builds and maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders and fosters a high-performance culture of excellence by creating, designing, and leading strategic human resource initiatives. The position will provide leadership in advancing faculty and staff success, as well as develop the policies and best practices necessary to maintain a positive, supportive, and fair working environment that attracts, develops, supports, and retains a qualified, high-performing, and diverse and inclusive workforce.
The CHRO will possess broad human resources knowledge; expertise in strategic, collaborative, and consultative services; a sophisticated approach to organizational leadership; and technical expertise in key areas of human resources. This leader will also bring experience leading human resources staff and programs in a complex organization.
The CHRO will demonstrate the core competencies and personal traits necessary for success, including intelligence, sound judgment, strong problem-solving skills, diplomacy, political savvy, a direct and open communication style, decisiveness, and a tolerance for organizational ambiguity.
This role requires an individual with experience contributing to an organization’s strategic direction through a significant human resources leadership role, typically the top human resources executive, and a proven record of leading transformational change.
Organizational leadership: Provides counsel to the EVP and senior leadership regarding strategy, best practices and organizational HR policies, in addition to informing them about issues of potential concern at either the programmatic or individual constituent levels. Collaboratively engages with the EVP to develop and define strategic goals related to human resources. Serves as an active and valued participant in the Administration and Operations (A&O) leadership team by providing strategic leadership and proactively driving HR solutions that support broader campus goals and objectives. Provides change management advice and recommends action to Mine’s leadership. Collaboratively designs change initiatives to meet the needs of the organization.
Functional Leadership: Provides leadership, direction and assumes full management responsibility for Human Resources programs, services and activities including recruitment and selection, employee relations, classification and pay, performance evaluation, discipline, equal employment opportunity, workers’ compensation, fringe benefits, and unemployment insurance. Develops a comprehensive Human Resources communications strategy to improve the efficacy of internal and external HR information.
Team Leadership: Plan, direct, and coordinate Human Resources’ work plan; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; review and evaluate work methods and procedures. Select, train, motivate, coach, mentor, and evaluate Human Resources staff; provide or coordinate staff development; collaborate with employees to develop skills and abilities. Provide ongoing feedback and formal evaluation to staff.
