Worcester Polytechnic Institute - WPI

The Business Manager for Strategic Planning is responsible for evaluating the market demand potential and developing the business model for workforce development and alternative credential programs for WPI. This critical role will conduct detailed market research, partner with Industry Advisory Board Members, solicit feedback from Alumni and work with Academic Deans and Departments to evaluate potential programs in this space. They will also work with the Executive Director to develop the business model and design pilot programs to test the market.

  • Conduct market research for potential graduate and workforce development training programs, as well as for potential revisions to existing programs. Evaluate potential demand for programs by gathering data from multiple sources (Emsi Burning Glass, BLS Data, Ipeds Data, competitive review of other institutions, etc.) to include in the business plan.
  • Lead data gathering efforts to understand Corporate Partner and Alumni education needs including but not limited to development and implementation of surveys and focus groups.
  • Assist in evaluation of potential partners for content and/or distribution of alternative credentials for WPI.
  • Partner with the Executive Director to develop a business plan and identify pilot programs to test in this space.
  • Develop success metrics and evaluate pilot program results.
  • Act as the implementation lead for new partners, including Online Program Management partners and WPI Now workforce development partners.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace and/or commitment to do so as an employee at WPI.

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field with experience developing business models and evaluating results.
  • Minimum of 5 years progressively responsible work experience.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Excellent presentation, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated capability with technology and research tools.
  • Proven ability to work effectively at multiple levels within the business and academic community.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment.
