Associate Vice President for Development

Summary:

The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Development elevates the UVU Development team to reach their full potential by facilitating gift development and fostering a culture of collaboration and performance to drive the success in Utah Valley University's (UVU) fundraising. The AVP is responsible for all fundraising activity supporting the college and academic program units. Working closely with the Vice President of Advancement, the AVP will help lead UVU's inaugural comprehensive campaign. The AVP manages all aspects of UVU's Major Gift Officers (MGOs) and Gift Planning teams, including: hiring; training; performance management; and college, school, and program assignments; and collaborates closely with deans and program directors. The AVP manages the Donor Relations and Annual Giving departments, including donor engagement and stewardship programs; the President's Emerald Society (UVU's most engaged donors); and all aspects of alumni and community annual giving. The successful candidate will lead with exceptional care for donors and staff, while focusing clearly on strategy, accountability, and results. The AVP also oversees a portfolio of principal major donors and cultivates relationships with high-net-worth individuals and potential corporate partners.

The AVP collaborates with and advises the President and Vice President of Institutional Advancement (IA) on university fundraising priorities and strategies; works closely with other areas of campus and IA to accomplish fundraising goals; and serves on the IA Executive Team and IA Leadership Team.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Work closely with the Vice-President (IA) to foster gift development from deans, university leaders, and frontline fundraisers. Hire and train team members, establish goals, evaluate performance of the MGOs, and give clear and timely feedback. Work with MGOs and deans (where applicable) to develop annual work plans; fundraising priorities for the colleges, schools, and programs; and strategies for individual donors and prospects. Collaborate with the IA Prospect Development department to identify major gift prospects and manage MGO portfolios. Manage the MGO Team budget.

2. Oversee work of Senior Director for Donor Relations and Annual Giving departments, establishing and implementing stewardship programs for donors at all levels. Ensure exceptional care for all friends of the university, including the highest-level donors in the President's Emerald Society. Guide the Annual Giving department as it works with Alumni Relations, MGOs, and other areas of UVU to solicit annual gifts from alumni and community members. Manage the budget of these departments.

3. Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of principal gift donors with a focus on identifying and engaging new prospective donors at the top giving level.

4. Develop collaborative relationships with other departments in IA and across campus including Vice-Presidents, Associate Vice-Presidents, Deans and program directors to help establish, communicate, and implement fundraising priorities.

5. Collaborate with Vice President of IA and President to lead the UVU's comprehensive campaign and establish university fundraising goals and priorities, and to develop and implement strategies for principal gift prospects.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelors degree in a directly related field, plus five years of experience related to the Summary of Duties of the position or any combination of higher education and/or directly related experience totaling eight years.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Deep understanding of the donor engagement process
  • Team leadership, including career development and feedback-giving.
  • UVUs history, culture, governance, operations, strategic priorities, composition of student-body, academic programs, leadership and stakeholders, and all other matters pertinent to becoming an effective storyteller on the university, its people, and mission.
  • Fundraising procedures and techniques, including the ability to apply this knowledge and mentor others to do the same.
  • Gift planning strategies and techniques.
  • Management and administration, including preparation and analysis of budgets and the review of expenditures in conformity with budgets.
  • Interpersonal skills to manage professional staff and adhere to UVU Policies and Procedures.
  • Comprehensive fundraising campaigns.
  • Proven management and leadership experience
  • Proven fundraising track record.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Strong aptitude with standard office productivity software, which must include MS Office programs.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Plan strategically, think critically, and communicate effectively.
  • Motivate others and deliver outstanding results by focusing on team effort and collaboration. Able to train and mentor a high-performing team.
  • Work with academic, business, philanthropic, and community leaders, representing UVU in an excellent manner in all external interactions.
  • Understand the comprehensive operation of an institution of higher education.
  • Manage records and databases.
  • Work with high energy, sense of urgency, and strong accountability.
  • Plan effective fundraising strategies and execute them well.
  • Freely navigate the campus, visit other campus locations, visit donors homes and businesses, and attend local and national meetings.
  • Secure personal transportation.


Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE)
An advanced academic degree.
Significant achievement leading and coaching professional fundraisers with documented success in achieving goals.
Experience and success with comprehensive capital campaigns.

Physical Requirements:

General office environment requires ability to see, hear, speak, fine hand manipulation for computer work, standing, walking.

Personal transportation will be critical to the successful performance of this role.
