Departmental Overview

The University of California Botanical Garden. (UCBG) features one of the most diverse plant collections in the United States. Established in 1890, the Garden's 34 acres contain over 13,238 taxas and more than 20,231 accessions from all over the world arranged by region. The Garden is famous for its large number of rare and
endangered species. The Mission Statement for the UCBG is "to develop and maintain a diverse living collection of plants to support teaching and worldwide research in plant biology, further the conservation of plant diversity, and promote public understanding and appreciation of plants and the natural environment."

The Marketing and Communications Specialist plays a major role in bringing in awareness of the Garden's mission, educational and community programs/events to the public. Instrumental in attracting funds to the Garden. Only one third of the Garden budget is provided by the campus, the rest is the result of memberships, programs, plant/gift sales, donations, and endowments.

Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and Development Director; plans, develops and implements strategic, cost effective marketing plans and events. This includes producing marketing materials and collateral, analyzing strategies for success, and researching marketing requirements. Builds relationships with outside companies and organizations.
  • Serve as Coordinator for the Garden's press release and media program.
  • Distributes and buys Garden publicity (announcements, advertisements, etc) to all media on a regular basis.
  • Responsible for Garden website development and updates.
  • Responsible for digital marketing and email newsletter content (Ex: Garden Clippings/Shop Promotions).
  • Oversees the creation and distributions of a hard copy annual report and newsletter.
  • Oversees and executes design, production, and distribution of Garden publications and other promotional materials, including membership materials, annual appeal, flyers, brochures, invitations, event signage, etc.
  • Establishes and maintains contact with other marketing professionals and vendors.
  • Coordinates all social media for the Garden. Provides periodic staff training as necessary.
  • Oversees at least one student Marketing Assistant.


Required Qualifications
  • Solid knowledge of marketing principles, content marketing concepts, strategies and best practices.
  • Experience in a marketing environment with record of accomplishment,
  • Ability to perform in high pressure, fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrated design aesthetic.
  • Effective planning and organizational skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse staff.
  • Organizational skills and skills in file creation, maintenance and management.
  • Written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skill in mentoring less experienced staff.
  • Availability for some evening and weekend work.
  • Advanced skills with the following software: Adobe Creative Suite, Email marketing platforms (i.e. Constant Contact, Mail Chimp), Content Management System (i.e. Word Press)


Education/Training:
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training


Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
