Overview

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) is responsible for pre- and post-award administration of grants and contracts; protection, management, and licensing of the University’s intellectual property; oversight of the use of human subjects and laboratory animals in research and teaching and the use of infectious agents and recombinant DNA;  implementation of the University’s policies on conflict of interest in research and misconduct in research and scholarship, and for working with other administrative offices to create an environment at the University that encourages and facilitates research. The OVPR assures that the services and resources provided by the units under its direction meet the needs of the research community and, in cooperation with the Vice President for Finance, satisfies the requirements of laws and regulations that govern research, and protecting the University’s interests. This includes policy development, strategic planning, and oversight. The OVPR staff also work closely with the research leadership of the schools and Tufts Medical Center to promote cooperation, collaboration, and sharing of resources to maintain a positive working relationship between the schools and with the hospital. The OVPR maintains close working relationships with faculty and department chairs in order to keep abreast of the needs and direction of research and to foster an environment of open communication and responsiveness.


What You'll Do

Responsible for directing the administration and financial operations for the Office of the Vice Provost, including oversight for division business and financial planning, administrative support, data analytics, training, and research technology. Serves as an integral member and senior leader within the OVPR and is recognized as the OVPR’s key financial, administrative and operational strategist.


What We're Looking For

Working closely with Vice Provost and with appropriate input from the Budget Center, develops and implements relevant operating and strategic business plans. Ensures financial, workforce, and technology resources are allocated in a manner consistent with plans. Acts as primary contact with University Budget Center.

Directs the daily operation of multiple organizational units within OVPR including the administrative support team, training, and data analytics/technology. Responsible for staff performance management: goal setting, coaching, developing, and assessment. Facilitates communication and coordination activities across assigned units.

Interfaces with other Tufts offices, Provost, Finance, University Council, and President to understand university strategies/initiatives and to communicate plans. Represents the OVPR and serves on university committees.

Assesses data and technology needs. Oversees the development and implementation of research technology initiatives and data analytics/metrics to meet current and future needs. Ensures technology plans integrate and can be supported by Tufts Technology Services.

Interfaces with Human Resources on staff issues- actions regarding hiring, terminations, salary and disciplinary actions. Assists with restructuring efforts. Reviews sensitive reports.

Minimum Required Experience, Education, Background, And Certifications/Licenses

·       Knowledge and experience as typically acquired through completion of Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or a related field and 10 years of related experience

·       Strong people management experience

·       Comprehensive knowledge of finance and administration in research institutional setting

·       Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

·       Demonstrated project management skills

 

Additional Preferred Experience, Education, etc. 

·       Master’s in Business Administration or Higher Education Administration

·       10+ years of administrative management experience in research academic environment
