Primary Function
The McKinley "Deacon" Davis CHANCE Program Director provides innovative, intentional, visionary, and transformational leadership and strategic direction. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in building relationships with key campus and community partners, leading to the enhancement of critical support services to increase CHANCE students’ retention and success. The leader of this unit will develop program policy overseeing administration in areas including assessment, evaluation, and program improvement. The ideal candidate will have proven success working with diverse student populations, including students from underserved communities, and will have the capacity to lead fundraising in collaboration with the NIU Foundation and curricular efforts that support the continued growth and success of the program. Further, knowledge of strengths-based practice and growth mindset as well as theories and practices related to adult development, student success, and retention. The ability to translate this knowledge into the design, practical application, and priorities of the program are critical. This position will be responsible for making data-informed decisions and consistently monitoring performance metrics. Further, this position will manage, train, hire and support full-time program staff providing strong direction, accountability, guidance, and professional development. The Director reports to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and is a critical partner with all NIU student service units, academic colleges, and advising directors.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

  • Lead all organizational efforts to collaborate with appropriate academic and curricular units to foster student success. * Develop and shape a vision for the CHANCE program, making clear alignments between program-level planning and the institution’s strategic plan. * Make data-informed decisions and maintain performance metrics ensuring a steadfast focus on student success. * Provide strategic direction and foster critical partnerships with campus and community stakeholders, including academic departments, Orientation and First Year Experience, Admissions, Housing and Residential Services, Campus Dining, the Huskie Academic Support Center, Student Affairs, Academic Diversity, Equity & Inclusion , and other student service units that support the CHANCE Program. * Lead unit assessment and evaluation efforts, including assessing academic and socio-emotional (non-cognitive) outcomes and sharing this information with appropriate stakeholders as part of a continuous enhancement process. * Maintain replication of successful evidence-based practices while identifying and supporting opportunities for innovation. * Work in collaboration with the academic advising community ensuring that CHANCE students are making adequate progress towards degree completion as well as coordinating retention and support efforts. * Engage with academic deans and campus leadership to regularly provide updates and perspectives regarding needs and outcomes. * Champion the expansion of external partnerships for the benefit of CHANCE students. * Provide professional leadership and establish effective working relationships, internally and externally. * Supervise and lead a professional staff, providing mentoring and professional development opportunities. * Create an environment that values a student-centric approach and equity-minded practices. * Use strong analytical skills to focus the team on providing services and programs that foster student success. * In collaboration with the NIU Foundation and Financial Aid and Scholarships, lead efforts to increase financial support for CHANCE students. * Manage the financial resources assigned to the program and oversee the pursuit of grants or other forms of external funding. * Work with campus constituencies to establish collaborative funding models and practices. * Coordinate internal and external communication and messaging about the CHANCE program, highlighting student and alumni achievements and program outcomes. * Manage the oversight of advisory boards (e.g., student, alumni, and faculty/staff) that serve to champion advance the efforts of the CHANCE Program. * Serve on a variety of campus and community committees. * Other duties as assigned by the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. * Curriculum development. Designing curriculum in an imaginative and collaborative process that increases CHANCE students’ retention and success. The Director develops and proposes courses to the Baccalaureate Council which is then sent to the University Council. The Director works with academic department chairs across campus to develop and enhance courses to support under-prepared students in their pursuit of higher education. In addition to developing curriculum for new courses or revamping existing courses, the Director monitors and advocates for course proposals throughout the entire curriculum process.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position

  • Masters degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field * A minimum of five years of experience with progressive administrative, supervisory, and leadership responsibility. * Knowledge and understanding of student development theory and student success. * Ability to foster and leverage relationships with alumni and external constituencies. * Strong analytical, evaluative, and negotiating skills with the ability to interpret and use data to support decision-making effectively. * Knowledge of academic advising services and curriculum development; college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy services and programming for low-income and first-generation college students; federal, state, local, rules and regulations. * Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. * Understanding of the barriers to postsecondary education faced by underserved students in educational environments and proven success working with diverse student populations. * Demonstrated experience or aptitude for budgeting and budget management.
