Senior Communications Manager, School of Business
Position Summary:
The School of Business at Stevens Institute of Technology invites applications for a Senior Communications Manager (SCM) to support the ambitious reputation and enrollment goals of the Stevens School of Business (SSB). This position oversees all communications efforts on behalf of the School and is responsible for the voice and tone of the brand for both internal and external stakeholders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The SCM must have excellent writing and digital communication skills; be a capable project manager able to handle multiple, quickly changing priorities; and be a team player able to collaborate with marketing and communications professionals throughout the university. This position is for a motivated self-starter who can independently manage projects and resources with limited supervision.
The SCM must understand the business landscape and have an appreciation for how technology is transforming that landscape. In addition, the SCM must be a storyteller capable of taking complex, technical research discoveries and translating them into understandable narratives for prospective students and the general public. This position reports to the Dean of the School of Business, and works closely with the School’s leadership in establishing priorities and completing objectives. The SCM collaborates closely with the Senior Marketing Manager, Division of Communications and Marketing, to coordinate communications from the SSB. The position also collaborates with the Director of Web and Digital Strategy, Division of University Relations to manage the website for the school and to launch new features.
Specific duties include:
- Supervision of digital communications manager, a writer, a photographer/videographer, and a graphics designer.
- Identifying, researching and writing stories about students, faculty, alumni and other stakeholders.
- Overseeing and editing content on School of Business website and identifying need for new pages and features.
- Developing creative concepts for and overseeing the execution of video content.
- Maintenance of editorial calendar aligned to reputation and enrollment objectives.
- Ownership, creation, and maintenance of all content for the SSB website, newsletters, and other print and digital campaign materials.
- Management of the School’s digital footprint, primarily through Stevens.edu, but also through active engagement on social media such as Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and other digital outlets.
- Development and refinement of campaigns to resonate with stakeholder groups.
- Regular assessment of campaign effectiveness, including adjustments as needed.
- Collaboration with marketing, public relations, admissions, development, and other offices to ensure consistent voice and branding across multiple channels.
- Direction of freelance projects and resources, including designers, printers, and agencies.
- Management of the SSB advertising budget in collaboration with the Dean’s office, and the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies.
- Promotion and support of events and other developments to important audiences.
- Identification and execution of tactical opportunities for prospective student engagement.
- Align communications with strategic direction of the School and the University.
- Other related duties as assigned and required.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Outstanding writing, web communication, and presentation skills are required for this position, as is a willingness to learn, the ability to manage multiple projects and excellent collaboration skills. In addition, candidates must possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, or a related field.
- At least five years’ experience in corporate communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
- An ability to take technical content and translate it into an understandable narrative.
- Experience creating sharable social media content.
- A hunger to find new ways to tell stories in a crowded market.
Exceptionally well-qualified candidates will also possess:
- Management experience, including goal setting and conducting performance reviews.
- Comfort working in digital content management platforms such as Contentful, Unbounce, and Slate.
- Experience working in Adobe CS, especially InDesign and Photoshop.
- Experience working in higher education.
- Familiarity with AP style.
