Stevens Institute of Technology, a leading national research university located in Hoboken, NJ, seeks an innovative and organized Assistant Director of Pre-College Programs for the Office of Pre-College Programs. The Office of Pre-College Programs upholds the mission and values of Stevens Institute of Technology while assisting participants in finding their inspiration in STEAM or Business education. Our team provides high school students with academic and social enrichment programs so that participants can experience a collegiate atmosphere first-hand. We strive to foster a supportive community where students, faculty, and staff may explore their skills and interests in a productive manner.

Main job responsibilities include assisting in the direction and coordination of summer pre-college camps for high school students, facilitating year-round pre-college initiatives, and attending recruitment activities. The Assistant Director provides students with opportunities to promote a college-going culture, develop leadership skills, and increase interest in STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) education. This position reports to the Director of Pre-College Programs.

The Assistant Director aids in the selection, training, and supervision of 40 undergraduate student staff members who serve as counselors and resident assistants during the summer months. The Assistant Director works closely with faculty to recruit professors for pre-college sessions, train them on program expectations, and develop course syllabi and schedules. Other job responsibilities include planning and promotion of program activities including but not limited to: program offerings, entertainment, recreational activities, virtual programs and off-campus site visits and excursions.
 
Essential Functions:

  • Scheduling classroom and event space
  • Recruit faculty, both internally and externally to Stevens to teach summer program courses and/or additional workshops as needed
  • Establish faculty and teaching assistant salaries and schedules
  • Communicate with student participants, their families and members of the Stevens community via phone, email, virtually, and in-person
  • Assist with interviewing, hiring, and training all Stevens undergraduate student staff
  • Hire and supervise graduate intern hall directors during summer months
  • Assist in the management of residence hall and dining logistics
  • Develop and maintain program schedules which includes course curriculum, locations, faculty, student staff, virtual programs and social activities
  • Develop a strong recruitment strategy that is in line with the university strategic plan
  • Utilization of organizational, planning and analytical skills, including working on multiple projects with a proven ability to work in a high stress, deadline driven environment
  • Provide creative solutions and innovative programming ideas to improve program outcomes and initiatives
  • Work closely with Undergraduate Admissions to align recruitment efforts with institutional priorities
  • Maintain data on alumni and develop alumni programming that promotes Stevens undergraduate programs
  • Travel domestically on occasion to attend college fairs, conferences, and visit high schools to recruit talented students, which may require evening and weekend travel
  • Participate in virtual recruitment efforts such as fairs, webinars, and weekend events.

Requirements:

  •  Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred, higher education administration, student affairs or related field strongly preferred)
  • 1-3; years of progressive experience in the field of pre-college programs, undergraduate admissions, residential life, student activities, new student orientation or relatable experience in higher education
  •  Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of constituents, including faculty and graduate students, high school students and their parents, guidance counselors, and Stevens faculty, staff, and students
  • Understanding of STEM higher education and professions
  •  Willingness and availability to work evenings and weekends

  •     Ability to relate and communicate well to middle & high school students and their parents/families

  •     Creative and innovative mindset
  •     Exceptional customer service skills
  •     Some knowledge of recruitment strategies, including but not limited to prospective student management, marketing, and targeted recruitment efforts
  •     Passion for the field for higher education and involvement in professional associations
  •     Assessment and data driven mindset
  •     Experience with grant-writing is a plus
  •     Experience with CRM’s is a plus
