Departmental Overview
Your journey to becoming a UC Berkeley student starts here. As the front door of the university, the mission of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions is to recruit, select, admit, assist, and enroll an academically excellent, highly accomplished, and broadly diverse freshman and transfer class.

This position recruits, evaluates and admits undergraduate students to the Berkeley campus of the University of California. Involves educating the public about admissions requirements, policies, and processes; developing and implementing programs for student recruitment and evaluating and selecting students for admission.

Responsibilities
  • Develops, interprets, and administers an admissions and/or recruitment program.
  • Manages initiatives related to diversity recruitment, partnership development and outreach.
  • Develop programs for department to strengthen diversity competencies.
  • Develops strong, sustainable relationships with Berkeley Alumni affinity groups as well as regional community-based organizations in order to develop ongoing regional recruitment programs throughout the country.
  • Develops and maintains high-level relationships with Berkeley students, staff, and faculty to encourage support and participation in all recruitment programs.
  • Works closely with deans and associate deans of the professional schools and colleges as needed to ensure that campus admission policy is being carried out and enrollment goals are considered in the recruitment and selection of applicants to these programs.
  • Helps to formulate campus undergraduate admission policy through providing analysis, advice, and expertise regarding diverse populations to the AVC/Director of OUA.
  • Responsible for a recruitment territory.
  • Serves as an experienced reader for freshmen and transfer applications. As such, serves as a mentor and resource for other readers in both processes, demonstrating the ability to meet the reading goals while balancing other office tasks as needed.
  • Responsible for the independent review of both freshmen and transfer applications, meeting reading expectations, measured by both quantity and quality of the reads.
  • Provide expertise in the reading process by participating in quality assurance reviews and identifying trends in the overall reading process.
  • Provides direction to subordinate professional and support staff.
  • Directs the work of multiple assistant directors and senior assistant directors.
  • Establishes expectations and goals.
  • Provides guidance to assistant directors and senior assistant directors in: establishing workload priorities; human resources issues and motivational and/or performance management.
  • Serves as a member of the OUA senior management team which directs all functions of OUA and manages the workings of the office on a daily basis.
  • At the direction of the AVC/Director represents the office in meetings or speaking engagements at schools, conferences, or in interviews with the media, particularly called on when the topics or issues in question fall within the position's areas of responsibility, such as multicultural recruitment, and represents the institution in such a manner as to promote goodwill and public support.
  • Responsible for ensuring that applicant inquiries receive the appropriate written/verbal response from the University, from the point of being a prospect to the point of enrollment. Responding on behalf of the Director as needed.
  • Work primarily on externally focused efforts, including collaborating with the other Associate Directors on the establishment and management of a master recruitment calendar, coordination with partners on and off campus to look for overlap or opportunities for partnership.
  • Work closely with campus partners to be certain that all recruitment and yield events are organized to best meet OUA goals.


Build and maintain relationships that relate to external recruitment activities.
  • Responsible for monitoring the budget impact for managed function.
  • Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
  • Complies with University, campus and departmental policies governing performance appraisal and professional development.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to subordinates on most complex issues, elevating to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Director as needed.


Professional Development:
  • Responsible for maintaining a state-of-the-art knowledge of best practices, policies and procedures in the admission field.
  • Participate in professional organizations in the UC system and on a regional and national level, where appropriate.


Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years experience working in college admissions, multicultural student affairs, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience and cultural sensitivity in working with multicultural student populations
  • Excellent project and program management skills
  • Ability to take initiative and to transform ideas into practical solutions
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work over sustained periods of time (The position involves occasional evening and weekend work and several weeks of travel annually by air.)
  • Superior judgment and discretion with sensitive and/or confidential issues/information
  • Advanced knowledge of education theory, policy, practice, and evaluation.
  • Significant knowledge of the goals and mission of higher education as they relate to academic preparation, recruitment, and advanced-standing admission.
  • Advanced knowledge of fiscal management policies and practices and higher education personnel management policies and practices.
  • Knowledge of organizational development strategies and practice.
  • Must have the ability to maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.


Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent years training/experience.


Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range $95,000.00 - $113,000.00/annually.
