    NEW POSITION DUE TO GROWTH

    Charlotte School of Law’s Center for Professional Development (CPD) seeks nominations and applications for a Career Counselor.

    The Career Counselor will assist the Director of the Center for Professional Development (CPD) in all operations of the career services function with the highest level of excellence, professionalism, sensitivity and confidentiality. Primary duties will include counseling law students and alumni regarding school-year and summer internships and career options upon graduation (e.g. attorney positions, graduate programs, fellowships, judicial clerkships, alternative careers). The CPD Career Counselor will also assist in all programming educating students on career options and skills, including workshops, presentations, panels, mock interviews, mentoring, job fairs, on-campus interviews and more. The CPD currently consists of a Director, (2) Career Counselors, a Projects & Database Coordinator, and an Administrative Assistant.

    The School received provisional approval in 2008 and recently received full accreditation from the American Bar Association (ABA) in 2011. The school is a member of The InfiLaw System, a consortium of independent law schools committed to making legal education more responsive to the realities of new career dynamics. Its mission is to establish student-centered, ABA accredited law schools in underserved markets and develop programs aimed at student academic and career success.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Provide and coordinate student-centered comprehensive career services counseling for students and alumni, both one-on-one and via workshops and related programming.
    • Assist CPD Director in career planning and job opportunity programs, including: job fairs, job postings, resume collections, on-campus interviews (OCI), judicial clerkships, mock interviews, mentoring and related programs.
    • Assist in maintaining, adding content to, and fully utilizing Symplicity, the CPD websites and other relevant career-related technology.
    • Promote minority and diversity opportunities and career-related programs and initiatives.
    • Assist in maintaining and fully utilizing the CPD Career Resources Room.
    • Assist in the operation, education and proper functioning and record-keeping of CPD community service opportunities programs.
    • Other Duties as Assigned

    Qualifications
    Education:
    • Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or other related discipline or J.D from an ABA-approved law school required.

    Experience:
    • At least 2-4 years of experience beyond advanced degree in higher education career counseling or in the legal or recruiting industry.
    • Career Services experience in higher education environment, or strong experience with and knowledge of law firms and legal public interest/governmental entities, including recruitment preferred.

    Certifications/Licensures
    • If a JD, Admitted to practice law in a U.S.

    Skills:
    • Knowledge, experience and application of career counseling skills, employment recruiting, and professional development training, particularly in the legal profession.
    • Proven track record of career counseling, time management, organizational skills, creative thinking, ability to prioritize, multi-task, plan events, and work both independently and as a part of a team.
    • Strong work ethic, high level of professionalism and sound judgment essential.
    • Working computer skills, including word-processing, calendaring, recordkeeping, database software and internet research. Familiarity with Symplicity or comparable career software and with Lexis/Nexis and Westlaw research a significant plus.
    • Must be able to relate well to students.
    • Position requires occasional travel and irregular hours on some evenings and weekends.
    • Experience in higher education, academic, or legal environment highly desired.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills required due to high level interaction with students and faculty.
