Eugene Lang College is the undergraduate liberal arts college within the New School. Administrative work at Lang is collaborative, based on a premise of teamwork, and is student centered. We are committed in our administrative staff to the same values that undergird Lang and The New School: civic engagement, social justice, and learning. We seek a Director for the Office of Civic Engagement & Social Justice at the college to provide strategic oversight and daily management of programs for students, faculty, alumni, and community partners. In addition, the director is an active participant in regional and national networks, helping to position the college as a leader in civic engagement and social justice among peer institutions. This is a 12-month senior level position reporting to the dean of the college.

  • Programmatic and Institutional Leadership
  • Provide leadership in a fast-paced office environment, supervising and managing operations of Lang CESJ
  • Propose and manage CESJ annual budgets, grants, and endowed funds
  • Prepare and implement needs assessments, annual goals, and long-range plans to ensure the quality of Lang CESJ programs
  • Develop, plan, design, implement, and assess Lang CESJ student and faculty programs
  • Serve as a primary resource to Lang students, faculty, and staff in need of resources or consultation related to campus climate, identity, access, equity and strategies for inclusion and offer related programming
  • Provide a safe space and community for one-on-one support and resources for Lang students dealing with identity development, navigating life, coping with campus climate concerns, struggling with academic demands, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Faculty Director of the Gural Scholars on program design, implementation and budget for the duration of this pilot project
  • Coordinate and collaborate with staff colleagues, academic departments, and faculty across the college and university to develop linkages to and facilitate Lang CESJ programs and events
  • Direct the college’s Ethnicity and Race minor
  • Serve as the dean’s advisor on thinking strategically about social justice issues and in seeking fundraising, grant writing, and other resource development initiatives

This position is a member of Lang’s senior leadership team and represents Lang and the Dean’s Office internally and externally in realizing Lang’s commitment to social justice

  • Serve as chair of Lang’s ad-hoc faculty committee on Civic Engagement and Social Justice
  • Serve as the university’s Project Pericles Program Director and implement related programming
  • Recommend and establish changes to policies, practices, and procedures that are not consistent with the university and college’s mission for social justice
  • Additional duties and committee membership assigned as needed
  • External Relations
  • Serve as the primary liaison to existing community partners and external organizations for the college and make appropriate faculty connections to these groups
  • Create and sustain new community-campus partnerships that are mutually beneficial and that enhance student learning, departmental linkages, and faculty research through community engagement
  • Represent the college through active engagement and leadership with citywide and national networks (e.g., NYMAPS, Project Pericles, and Imagining America)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Relevant advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate)
  • Five years of related professional experience in higher education or community based and social justice organizations
  • Two years of staff supervision experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to access, diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice and comfort working with diverse groups of students, faculty, and community partners
  • Experience designing and leading educational programs and events
  • Ability to lead, manage, and prioritize multiple projects and tasks to completion
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with the principles, theories, and research in the fields of academic civic engagement and social justice education
  • Exceptionally strong skills in dialogue facilitation, organizational management, community building, and relationship management, deep listening, public speaking, and professional writing
  • Facility in working both collaboratively and as a strategic leader
  • Flexibility, sense of humor, and ability to adapt easily to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three plus years of experience in higher education context
  • Strong proficiency with intersectionality and experience serving and supporting first-generation, LGBTQIAGNC, and students of color with multiple marginalized identities
  • Experience developing learning outcomes and assessment tools for curricular and co-curricular programs
  • Familiarity with New York City or comparable urban environs, and knowledge of nonprofit, government, community-based organizations, and cultural institutions
