Director of Academic Support for Athletics

The Director of Academic Support for Athletics works under the direction of the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Services. The Director of Academic Support for Athletics is a member of the University of San Francisco Athletic Department and works cooperatively with student-athletes, coaches, athletic department staff members, and other campus offices, departments and staff who are involved with the academic lives of student-athletes. This position provides academic support for approximately 50 student athletes from pre-enrollment to graduation.
In coordination with the University's general academic advising structure, The Director of Academic Support for Athletics will play a prominent role in framing advising issues for student-athletes. A central resource and support to men's and women's basketball student-athletes and other at risk student-athletes, the Director of Academic Support for Athletics will have a comprehensive understanding of the curriculum, academic rules and regulations, and the unique needs of student-athletes. This position works in coordination with the Athletic Department's Compliance Office, the Office of the Registrar, the Admission's Office, the Center for Academic and Student Achievement (CASA), and the institution's Faculty Athletics Representative to ensure student-athletes remain in compliance with NCAA and USF policy.
(60%) Academic Support to Undergraduate Student-Athletes
Oversee the academic support and development program for all basketball student-athletes
Acts as the professional academic mentor for a cohort of undergraduate student-athletes from pre-enrollment through graduation
Serve as the liaison with CASA and assist with framing advising issues related to academic policies, rules and regulations, with particular attention to the unique needs of student-athletes, making recommendations when appropriate
Monitor academic progress of all basketball student-athletes including requesting progress reports and makes interventions for students in difficulty
Serves as a central resource and support to faculty and staff academic coaches who advise student-athletes
Provides outreach and mentoring to all student-athletes at risk, on probation, considering a leave of absence, returning from a leave, or who have special academic interests or needs
Communicate with registrars office to ensure junior and senior basketball student athletes are on track to graduate
Manage the USF Athletic Department Study Hall program including hiring, training and supervising study hall monitors and graduate student tutors
Apprises student-athletes of scholarship opportunities, and participates in related recruitment and selection processes
Other duties as assigned
(30%) NCAA Compliance Management
Liaison with admissions for potential student-athletes admissions status and communicate with coaching staff
Assists the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Services and other staff members in determining which courses count towards specific requirements
Assists in communicating with academic departments regarding the academic compliance needs of student-athletes
Organize official GPA reporting for the Fall and Spring semesters
In conjunction with CASA, assist basketball student-athletes in course selection to ensure continuing eligibility
(10%) Other Academic Services
Create and implement campus and faculty engaging programs
Develop career development workshops
Implement summer orientation workshops
Meet with Prospective Student-Athletes and their parents to present academic programs and services
Bachelors degree, masters preferred; Psychology and/or Education degree preferred; 2 years of experience in academic advising and/or coordinating academic programs; experience in academic advising in the context of NCAA regulations preferred. Candidate must demonstrate outstanding administrative and organizational skills with a high attention to detail and accuracy. Strong computer skills and ability to set priorities, coordinate multiple projects, meet deadlines and work with minimal supervision.

This position, along with all coaches and staff, is responsible for the integrity of the University of San Francisco Athletics Program and for the reputation of the University of San Francisco. This position is responsible for insuring that his/her involvement with Athletic Department activities maintains the integrity of the Universitys reputation and does not negatively impact the relationship between the University and its faculty, staff, students and alumni. Additionally, this position must comply with University policies and procedures, NCAA and West Coast Conference rules and regulations.
