Vice Provost for Planning and Administration
The New School
The Vice Provost reports directly to the Provost and is responsible for oversight of resources (people/space/budget) that support the academic mission and achieve academic priorities. The position holder provides leadership and expertise to advance the University’s strategic planning process and strengthen academic operations. The incumbent works closely with other key leaders on high level planning and decision-making in support of academic programs and student success.
PLANNING and ADMINISTRATION
- Provide leadership in pursuit of the strategic goals of the university.
- Plan for the efficient and effective distribution of resources, ensuring the development of business plans and projections to support a broad array of academic and administrative initiatives.
- In collaboration with senior leadership evaluate options to re-align enrollment, tuition models, calendar options and alternative delivery methods.
- Work with key partners to develop policies and procedures
FINANCIAL ANALYSIS AND MANAGEMENT
- Serve as a member of the University-wide Budget Committee that analyzes and recommends funding from requests across the university and manage the academic budget component of the overall planning cycle
- Responsible for consolidating and evaluating academic budget needs from the colleges and the Provost Office
- Provide analysis, assessment and recommendations to support decision-making by the Provost.
- Oversee PO/President budgets and staffing lists
- Contribute financial insight to academic policy proposals
- Lead and manage two budget and analysis staff and in conjunction with IR office, coordinate the work of two additional staff dedicated to PO initiatives
- Lead discussions between Provost and deans to coordinate requests for searches, curricula funding strategies, planning modulations over the year and the annual budget approval process.
- Responsible for planning the distribution of part-time and full-time faculty lines. This requires projections of enrollment patterns, vacancy savings, PTF expenditures and student credit hour projections.
- Contribute financial insight for faculty compensation strategies
- Oversee, in partnership with the Curriculum & Learning unit in the PO, the development of business plans related to new programs and the financial impact of major curricular changes
ACADEMIC SPACE/FACILITIES/CAPITAL PLANNING
- Evaluate capital requests from colleges for review with Provost.
- Work with the Space Working Group and the Buildings department to ensure adequate accommodation of academic programs.
- Lead collaborative work between space planning, registration, college, and PO on instructional space needs
- Oversee Office of Institutional Research (Associate Provost and 3 staff) which is responsible for institutional reporting including cost of attendance, preparation of retention projections, management of course evaluations, annual update to Cost of Education project, dashboards for key performance indicators, and management of the data stewards group to improve data integrity and reporting as well as serving as partner in various analytical projects.
- Liaison with colleges and central administration to ensure good communication, resolve policies and practices regarding enrollment goals, course planning, registration policies. Partner with IT in development of strong data governance practices and policies. Academic Planning staff serve as key partners in university’s transition to workday.
- Member of various committees: Academic Leadership, Provost Office Senior Staff, Operations, Budget Committee, Space Planning Group, Finance/PO Committee.
- Oversee operation of the University Art Collection (2 curators)
- Bachelor’s degree required, graduate work in fields of financial or higher education strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible budget, analysis, planning experience in a complex educational, research or other closely related organization.
- Demonstrated experience with development of varied and complex financial/programmatic analyses and reports in support of strategic decision-making.
- Outstanding written and verbal communications skills with the ability to effectively convey complex data to a wide array of audiences.
- Experienced user of financial systems, analytical tools and databases. Experience with Workday is a plus.
- Demonstrated leadership ability with a proven record of success in working with all levels of leadership and staff in a rapidly changing and complex organization.
- Excellent judgment and creative problem- solving skills
- Strong inter-personal skills.
