University of Alberta
Appointment of Vice-President (Research)

The University of Alberta is a Top 5 Canadian university located in Edmonton, one of Canada’s largest, most diverse and dynamic cities, with a reputation for excellence in discovery-driven and translational research, scholarship and creative activities across diverse areas of impact in science, humanities, social sciences, health sciences, and fine arts. Home to more than 39,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff, the University has an annual budget of $1.7 billion and attracts approximately $450 million in sponsored research revenue. The U of A offers close to 400 rigorous undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in 18 faculties on five campuses – including one rural and one francophone campus – and has 250,000 alumni worldwide. The University remains dedicated to the promise made in 1908 by founding president Henry Marshall Tory that knowledge shall be used for "uplifting the whole people" as represented today by the institutional strategic plan, For the Public Good (www.ualberta.ca/strategic-plan).

The U of A seeks to appoint a new Vice-President (Research) with an exceptional record of scholarly achievement and the ability to play a key leadership role in delivering our academic vision. Reporting directly to the President, the Vice-President (Research) is responsible for building top-level research collaborations and maximizing the outputs and impact of U of A’s research at the provincial, national, and international levels. The Vice-President (Research) works closely with a broad group of stakeholders including funding agencies, industry partners, and leaders from across the University in order to create the environment and opportunities that enable U of A faculty, staff, and students to have the greatest impact in their fields in order to fuel discovery and advance knowledge.

The successful candidate will be an individual of high academic standing and have significant senior management experience in a major academic institution. They will be a visionary for world-class research at the U of A and possess the compelling leadership and communication skills necessary to deliver on this vision. They will also possess high levels of strategic thinking and analytical capabilities as well as a track record of achievement across a significant diversity of initiatives and projects.

This position is in accordance with University terms and conditions, and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and will be competitive with public research post-secondary institutions. Components of compensation will include base salary, a comprehensive benefits package (which can be viewed at www.hrs.ualberta.ca), as well as additional negotiated benefits applicable to the position.

For further information and details on how to apply, please download the Appointment Details via the Perrett Laver website by visiting www.perrettlaver.com/candidates and quoting reference 2856.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. If suitable Canadian citizens or permanent residents cannot be found, other individuals will be considered.

We encourage women; First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons; members of visible minority groups; persons with disabilities; persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression; and all those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas and the University to apply.
