The College for Creative Studies (CCS) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Graduate Studies.

Located in Detroit, a UNESCO City of Design and one of the "Top Ten Most Innovative Cities in America" (CNN Money, 2014), CCS has been highly regarded as one of most successful art and design institutions globally with more than 1,400 talented students and over 400 dedicated faculty members in 13 undergraduate and 4 graduate programs.

Graduate Studies at CCS attracts an internationally diverse student body to four MFA programs – Color & Materials Design, Integrated Design, Interaction Design and Transportation Design – to study in state-of-the-art facilities, with access to advanced technological capabilities to be tomorrow’s leaders and innovators in creative fields.

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is responsible for advancing Graduate Studies by strengthening current programs, articulating strategies for future expansion, supporting faculty and students, enhancing connections with industry as well as its academic and research partners, and fostering an energetic and diverse educational environment.

The Dean will also play an integral role in nurturing a culture of innovation with a Center for Innovation, to be launched as a hub for collaborative projects and a knowledge base for advanced research and practice in art and design.


Oversee the Graduate Studies division in alignment with the College’s strategic plan

Enhance the quality, visibility and reputation of the CCS Graduate Studies globally

Develop the strategy for sustainable growth and new programs in a range of appropriate fields

Expand graduate enrollment in collaboration with department chairs and admissions department

Hire and develop faculty to deliver industry-leading education

Lead curriculum development and assessment plans to provide the best and most
relevant education to students

Expand collaborative relationships with industry and research partners

Minimum Requirements:

A terminal degree (MFA or a degree equivalent or higher) in an area of art and/or design

Experience in program development, planning, and supervision in higher education, preferably in graduate studies

At least 5 years of teaching experience, including leadership in higher education and at least 5 years of professional experience in related areas

Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and group communication skills

Highest standards of personal and academic integrity

Desirable Qualifications:

Reputation in design and education communities through publications or presentations in national and international venues

A proven track record of leadership in academia

An open-minded, collaborative approach when managing complex initiatives

A vibrant personality with effective facilitating skills

Appreciation for multi-disciplinary perspectives and approaches

Financial acumen and inherent comfort in dealing with fiscal issues

Salary: Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
