The Assistant Director for Liturgy, Music and Faith Formation works under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Chaplain/Priest to provide all campus liturgies, music at those liturgies and deliver specified faith formation opportunities for students at Saint Mary's College. Further, this Assistant Director oversees the following student retreat opportunities: New Student Retreat and Koinonia Retreat (or the equivalent).
1. Liturgy Planning:
  • Assist Chaplain, along with student Liturgy Planning Committee, in development and delivery of all weekly liturgies and special liturgies.
  • In consultation with the Chaplain design and implement liturgical environment appropriate to each season or event.
  • In consultation with the Chaplain, contribute to the compiling and proofreading of the Worship Aids.
  • In consultation with Chaplain, ensure the coordination of oversight of the Chapel and Sacristy, its use, scheduling, communication, and upkeep.
  • In consultation with the Chaplain create the script for all liturgies.
  • Assist the Chaplain with any other areas of liturgy preparation as needed.

2. Coordinate Music at all Liturgies:
  • In collaboration with the Chaplain coordinate weekly sacred music that is determined and prepared appropriate for the Eucharistic celebration of the Mass, along with various seasonal events and other major liturgies. Preparation and variety should foster the full and active participation of the assembly as its primary function, responsibility and vision. Grounded in an advanced understanding of Sacred Music according to various Liturgical Documents pertaining to liturgy and music, selections should be theologically and liturgically sound. Music and rehearsals should be appropriate and proportional based upon the pastoral setting, readings and the liturgical calendar.The selection process should be completed in a timely manner in order to produce worship aids as needed.
  • Choir, musicians and Cantors: Singers and musicians are to be recruited, rehearsed, prepared and orchestrated for all liturgies and events. Students are the primary focus of these roles. Cantors are to be well-trained and rehearsed. Music should reflect and celebrate the cultural and religious diversity of our community. Special time should be afforded to develop student-musicianship and cantors.
  • Contribute to Worship Aid: formats, proofs and approves the production of worship aids for all liturgies of which they are a part. In collaboration with the Chaplain worship aids are to be proofed, approved and sent to print in a timely and specific manner prior to each Mass or liturgy.

3. Faith Formation and Retreats:
  • Assist Chaplain in oversight of RCIA and Confirmation program for campus community
  • Oversee all aspects of the following Retreats, including student leader formation: New Student Retreat and Koinonia Retreat (or the equivalent)
  • Assist Chaplain with Advent and Lenten programming.

4. Student Mentoring and Leadership Development:
  • mentor and shape student leaders in areas within your purview.

5. Administrative Responsibilities
  • work with Chaplain/Priest to schedule monthly Chapel Maintenance Committee meetings, establish agenda and implement any action items, ensure minutes are circulated in a timely manner.
  • facilitate Chapel Maintenance Committee meetings
  • in consultation with the Chaplain/Priest produce publicity and marketing materials for all events in the area of liturgy and faith formation; ensure it is circulated or posted appropriately across campus (including electronic posts)
  • in consultation with Chaplain/Priest, order liturgical supplies and elements for chapel and other worship spaces
  • in consultation with Chaplain/Priest, secure liturgical objects and material for special celebrations
  • coordinate with Administrative Assistant to reserve spaces for meetings and prayers.
  • work collaboratively with Administrative Assistant to manage Chapel use and logistics on the college calendaring system, serve as back up to approving use of Chapel when Administrative Assistant is unavailable.
  • assist with the preparing of any memorials held in the Chapel.

6. Other Duties as Assigned
  • collaborate with Mission and Ministry staff and student leadership when departmental program support is required
  • contribute to staff agenda for MMC weekly meetings
  • meet regularly with the Chaplain/Priest, and when appropriate the Director of Mission and Ministry Center
  • provide support to the college community on issues and programs related to liturgy, music and faith formation.
  • other duties assigned by the Chaplain/Priest and Director.
