The University of Alberta is a Top 5 Canadian and Top 100 Global, multi-campus university primarily located in Edmonton, Alberta, with a reputation for excellence in teaching, both translational and discovery-driven research, scholarship, and creative activities across diverse areas of impact in science, humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. Home to 39,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff, the University has an annual budget of $1.84 billion and attracts nearly $450 million in sponsored research revenue; in addition, it will soon be entering into a $1.5 billion fundraising campaign. The U of A offers close to 400 rigorous undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in 18 faculties on five campuses – including one rural campus (Augustana) and one francophone (Saint-Jean) – and 275,000 alumni worldwide. The University launched a new strategic plan, "For the Public Good," in September 2016, designed to empower our community of creative people to take risks and make imaginative leaps towards as yet undetermined futures while remaining dedicated to the promise made in 1908 by founding president Henry Marshall Tory that knowledge shall be used for "uplifting the whole people." Objective 9 of the Strategic Plan is particularly relevant for Augustana.
The Augustana Campus in the City of Camrose, approximately 90 km from Edmonton, offers a uniquely undergraduate experience through its commitment to excellence in liberal arts and sciences education. It produces graduates who are capable of engaging life with intellectual confidence and imaginative insight, equipped for leadership and service, and committed to the betterment of their world. Half of Augustana’s 1,000 students live on campus and there is one professor for every 16 students ensuring individual attention. Hands-on, experiential learning prepares students for the realities of the workplace, while the focus on creative and imaginative processes ensures students are ready to navigate change. In addition, emphasis is placed on community engagement, developing meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities in the local area, environmental sustainability and global-scale diversity studies. Students choose from a wide array of programs that lead to a Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Science, Management, Music or in a combined Science/ Education degree. Augustana also benefits from its membership in COPLAC, an international association of public liberal arts colleges. The campus is deeply rooted and engaged in the community and is close to Camrose’s lively downtown core and an extensive trail system for walking, running, bicycling, and cross-country skiing.
Reporting to the Provost and Vice President (Academic), the Dean of the Faculty of Augustana is responsible for the leadership and administration of all aspects of the operations of the Faculty, and as Executive Officer of the Campus the Dean partners with University administrative offices in the delivery of all campus services. As a senior administrator for the University, the Dean will strive to align and balance the interests of the University with the interests of the Campus and Faculty. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a unique campus in which excellence in teaching, world-leading research, and engaged scholarship flourish. As the face of the Faculty, the Dean is champion of new and innovative curriculum changes, research, scholarship, professional training, local and global outreach, relationships with Augustana’s Indigenous neighbours, and recruitment of high quality faculty, staff, and student talent. Most faculty members teach a 3/3 teaching load.
The successful candidate will possess an earned doctorate, will be appointed to a continuing position at the rank of full Professor, and will be an inspirational, strategic and inclusive leader with a proven track record of administrative success, teaching innovation, and scholarly achievement. They must demonstrate exceptional communication skills and build effective relationships on the campus, across the University and with community partners. Crucially, they will model the highest ethical standards while developing a shared vision for the Faculty in support of the University’s mission and values. Travel may take place within or outside of Alberta if required.
