Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA). Reporting to the Chancellor, the VCSA serves on the Chancellor's Cabinet and provides visionary, creative, and energetic leadership for the Division of Student Affairs.
The VCSA will provide executive leadership to student services, managing the recruitment and retention of students, and enhancing the campus as a lively academic community and creating transformative learning opportunities to prepare students to be successful in a global society. The VCSA will manage a budget of approximately $200 million annually, provide oversight to more than 1200 full-time staff members and 3200 student employees and serve as a key member of the Chancellor's leadership team.
The VCSA will provide leadership, support, and direction within a division that is structured as follows:
Student Life - The Career Services Center and Illinois Leadership Center, Counseling Center, Office of Dean of Students and the Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA).
Auxiliary Units - Campus Recreation, Illini Union, McKinley Health Center, University Housing and The State Farm Center (Co-managed with Division of Intercollegiate Athletics).
Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations (OIIR) - Asian American Cultural Center, Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center, Diversity Education & Social Justice Program, La Casa Cultural Latina, Native American House, Women's Resource Center, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center.
More specific responsibilities include:
Provide vision, leadership, oversight, direction and management for Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Play a vital role in creating and maintaining a healthy campus environment and student wellness through services, programs, and innovative learning experiences beyond the classroom while encouraging a sense of community among students, faculty and staff.
Create a student experience focused on a campus culture that promotes student success in a diverse environment that promotes the success and inclusion of all student.
Work extensively with undergraduate and graduate students both formally through student governance and informally through specific initiatives, responding to student needs and concerns and facilitating students' involvement in the life of the campus.
Promote knowledge of and compliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies.
Ensure consistent, prompt, and thorough investigation of on- and off-campus incidents involving alleged violations of university policy and oversee the enforcement of University Policies and the Student Conduct Code.
Oversee the strategic planning process in the division, ensuring consistency with and support of institutional strategic goals.
Advise the Chancellor and serve as a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet for administrative campus policy-making decisions.
Align divisional programs with the institutional mission in consultation with others through the principals of shared governance.
Provide strong academic, budgetary, capital and infrastructure leadership within a complex organization;
Explore innovative approaches to enhance the student experience.
Foster collaborations with academic units and programs.
Develop and implement measures and methodology for determining the effectiveness and efficiency of the Student Affairs Office.
Represent the campus, as appropriate, in the community and in professional organizations.
Lead advancement efforts and establish fundraising goals for the division and its units.
Lead internal and external committees and task force on various initiatives.
Liaison with the State and local community on issues related to student life and well-being.
Develop and sustain a team environment across the complex range of Student Affairs units.
Master's degree required with a Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred.
Minimum of ten years of progressive and relevant responsibility and leadership in student affairs at the level of Assistant/Associate Vice Chancellor or above at comparable institutions.
Evidence of successful collaborations with a wide range of stakeholders within and outside the university.
Skilled and effective communicator and an inclusive decision-maker who is successful in being transparent with staff and students.
Success working effectively within a complex, multi-campus university structure and a philosophy of shared governance.
Demonstrated commitment to social justice and student advocacy, including commitment to examining and providing solutions to barriers that students face within a system of higher education.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity.
Demonstrated commitment to inclusion.
Understanding of the importance of fundraising and development initiatives in student affairs.
Demonstrated knowledge about best practices in the profession, critical student issues, crisis response and higher education trends.
Strong experience in the interpretation of policies related to risk management, student conduct, and Title IX requirements.
Thorough understanding of the financial issues facing a diverse college at a land-grant institution.
Highest level of authentic rapport with students and staff.
The position of VCSA is a full-time, benefit eligible appointment. Start date is as soon as mutually agreed upon with a salary commensurate with experience.
