The University of Utah invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Science. The Dean will be a tenured professor serving as the College’s chief academic and administrative officer with duties involving oversight of the academic programs, fundraising, recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty and students, and communicating to the University and community at large the goals and achievements of the College and the importance of science in society.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative, forward-thinking delegator, flexible in leadership style who will build on the current vision and initiatives of the College and the University as a whole. The new Dean will possess excellent interpersonal communication skills; the Dean will be responsible for fostering and maintaining relationships with University administration, alumni, legislature, and the community. The College seeks a leading-edge researcher broadly aware of upcoming trends in funding, research, and technologies across science disciplines.

The Dean will serve a five-year renewable term to begin July 2019 and will report to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong scholarly credentials and research accomplishments commensurate with an international reputation. Track record of publicly funded research preferred.
  • Leadership experience. Prior administrative experience as Department Chair at a major research institution or equivalent is strongly preferred.
  • Fundraising experience.
  • A commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • Experience recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, staff, and students.

College of Science
The College of Science comprises the School of Biological Sciences and the departments of Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics & Astronomy, which together house 169 tenured or tenure-track faculty members. There are currently more than 2,500 students enrolled in the College of Science, making it one of the largest colleges on campus. Research in the College of Science generates $42.3 million per year in external support, and the scholarly research activities of the faculty and students support the growing technology base of the local and regional economy. The College serves as a primary resource to the community through numerous programs designed to improve science literacy and increase access to high quality science education for all citizens. The College of Science has an important stake in the University’s capital campaign including a new Physical Sciences Building, an innovative Undergraduate Research Center, endowed Chairs and Professorships, and undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships.
