Associate Provost for Academic Affairs

The University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) is searching for an Associate Provost for Academic Affairs (www.umsl.edu/searches) to make a positive contribution by engaging with all constituent groups on campus to guide and facilitate key academic affairs functions. UMSL is the largest public research institution located in Missouri’s most diverse, populous, and economically vibrant region, and has been rated a Tier One institution by the US News and World Report.

Led by 1500 faculty across 10 schools and colleges, UMSL offers an array of options to traditional and non-traditional students as well as continuing and adult learners, including 15 doctoral degree programs, numerous certificate programs, and the only professional optometry degree in Missouri. With a total enrollment of over 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students, UMSL provides excellent learning experiences and leadership opportunities for a diverse student body whose influence on the region upon graduation is immense. UMSL is a part of the University of Missouri System and is classified by Carnegie as both an RU-H (high research activity) university and as a Community Engaged Campus.

This is an exciting time to join UMSL! We are implementing our new strategic plan, we have just successfully completed our 10-year reaccreditation by the Higher Learning Commission, and our faculty are undertaking an extensive analysis of programs through the curriculum alignment process grounded in student learning outcomes. With a focus on student success, we have increased graduation, retention and quality indicators as we transform the lives of our students and communities.

THE POSITION

The Associate Provost will report directly to the Provost and provide transparent and collaborative leadership, oversight, and engagement with our campus community on assessment and accreditation. Working side-by-side with faculty, deans and staff, the Associate Provost will advance our academic mission and our strategic goals. The successful candidate will serve as a strong partner regarding ongoing diversity and equity initiatives, faculty engagement and development as well as faculty personnel matters.

As part of the Provost’s leadership team, the Associate Provost will work with colleagues across campus, the Faculty Senate, the University of Missouri System office, and the Missouri Department of Higher Education to ensure academic policies, processes and procedures are clearly articulated and the UMSL campus is well represented at all levels.

We seek an active collaborator with a hands-on mentality who understands the increasing complexities of higher education and the imperative of diversity at all levels of the university. Further, we desire an accessible leader who embraces the expanding opportunities and demands of serving our community partners, understands the importance of helping instill optimism and realism in our students and our urban campus community, and recognizes the need of being adept and adaptable in this ever-changing environment.

It is expected that the successful candidate will possess a terminal degree from an accredited university (and will be eligible for a tenured faculty position at UMSL) with 7 or more years of leadership experience within a university setting (e.g., department chair, director, associate dean, dean, vice provost). Other desirable skills include:

  • Ability to successfully provide collaborative and transparent leadership on the Provost’s senior leadership team
  • Established knowledge of and experience with strategic planning and with university-wide accreditation procedures
  • Understanding of curricular and programmatic oversight and assessment
  • Experience in faculty development, academic personnel administration, and policies and procedures, and the ability to work successfully with faculty governance
  • Strong knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion issues and trends in higher education and experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment
  • A history of building and maintaining strong relationships across all levels and the ability to value and manage the different needs of all constituent groups
  • Passion for a high standard of accomplishment and a devotion to continuous improvement
  • Record of exemplary personal and professional integrity
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate and engage with and inspire others
  • Excellent project management skills with attention to detail and deadlines
