Reporting to the Executive Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, the Director of Alumni Engagement will work as a member of the Development and Alumni Affairs team to create value-added programmatic ideas and support through events, volunteer efforts, communication materials, and other engagement tools. The Director will be a key participant in executing overarching strategic alumni engagement initiatives along with measurement of the success of those initiatives.
Job Duties and Accountabilities:

*Cultivate relationships with SMU alumni across all programs. Through personal visits, events, and group meetings, engage alumni in the life of the University, connecting them with current students, faculty, and administrators as well as with other alumni.
*Create and maintain a comprehensive strategic plan for SMU Alumni Societies and Clubs and as well as volunteer leadership.
*Recruit volunteer leaders to support SMU programs. Encourage and promote volunteer leaders to grow SMU Society and Club participation.
*Provide connections to other staff for specific programming efforts. Work with faculty and volunteer leaders, develop and support initiatives (e.g. programs, events) to strengthen alumni connections to the University. Evaluate programs by defined metrics to determine success.
*Work closely with the Alumni Affairs and Special Events Coordinator to design and execute events to drive participation and engage assigned alumni groups. Maximize event attendance through innovative programming and communications. Manage event logistics including venue and vendor selections, invitation segments, tracking, program development, material preparation, communications, budget, timelines, event evaluation, and on-site staffing and troubleshooting.
*Work collaboratively to connect alumni or groups to SMU programs as appropriate.
*Identify alumni who would like to begin or increase their engagement with SMU, conducting in-person meetings and phone calls to gauge areas of interest and identify appropriate pathways, including volunteerism and philanthropy.
*Maximize individual and staff travel by maintaining an evolving portfolio of alumni and friends to visit personally.
*Work collaboratively with all Development and Alumni Affairs staff to build relationships and connect alumni to SMU. Promote opportunities for philanthropic support of the university when appropriate and transition prospects to the Director of Major Gifts or the Executive Director of Development and Alumni Affairs.

Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint etc. required.
Proficient writing skills and demonstrated organizational skills required.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum of five years of experience in alumni engagement, development, higher education, or related field
Successful candidates will have experience leading and managing a team, with direct leadership experience with volunteers preferred, including identifying, cultivating, training and stewarding individuals
Experience working with a variety of constituents including students and senior level executives
Experience in strategic planning with associated measurable outcomes.
Experience with adhering to a budget.
Position does require travel and a valid driver’s license is required
Ability to lift a minimum of up to 20 pounds. Must be physically fit enough to move boxes, set up displays etc.
