Departmental Overview

The Division of Undergraduate Education (UE) engages the campus on vital academic initiatives that enrich the UC Berkeley undergraduate experience. The division offers programs and services that support the diverse Berkeley community of students, faculty, and staff in teaching, learning, and discovery. Under the leadership of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, UE formulates and implements both campus strategy around undergraduate education and the student experience, and directs the operational work of academic support units; American Cultures Center, the Athletic Study Center, Berkeley Changemaker, Berkeley Connect, Berkeley Discovery, the Biology Scholars Program, Research, Teaching and Learning, and the Student Learning Center.

The Advising Strategy + Training (AS&T) initiative, housed in the VPUE's immediate office in partnership with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), engages the advising and student services community in development, learning, and leadership. Berkeley's advising and student service professionals, in turn, support students throughout their academic, personal, and professional journey.

Responsibilities

This career position reports to the Assistant Vice Provost and Chief of Staff in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. Goals and priorities for this position are developed together with the AVP-COS and in consultation with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Council on Advising & Student Support Executive Committee, and the Center for Teaching and Learning. To support cross-campus connections related to advising, the role also works closely with the Graduate Division and the Division of Equity and Inclusion. The incumbent will shape aspects of this position to respond to the advising community's needs and priorities.

This position is focused on improving the experience of all students through the strategic development of cross campus advising strategies for the academic and co-curricular advising and student services job family. The incumbent oversees the development, management, and revision of professional development programming, currently including the AS+T Presents and the Equity-Oriented Advising and Coaching Program, to foster campus-wide a strengths-based, equity-oriented advising approach that supports student engagement, success, and belonging. The position also plays an important role in engaging with advising-related policy developments, informing the roll-out of new campus initiatives that intersect with advising and student services. The Manager of Advising Policy and Strategy works closely with the Council on Advising and Student Services (CASS) and its Executive Committee. Using campus-wide and self-initiated assessment instruments, the incumbent uses data to track trends, inform recommendations and make enhancements to training and professional development activities to positively impact the student experience.

Strategy, Stakeholder Engagement & New Initiatives

Participate with high level management in strategic thinking and planning in the domain of advising policy and practice. Develop proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for advising and its role across campus priorities and units. Propose, lead and/or participate on policy and planning committees and working groups.

  • Provide strategic direction for advising services that supports the implementation of campuswide strategic priorities, such as the Latinx Thriving Initiative, the African American Initiative, and the Discovery Initiative.
  • Serve on the Council on Advising and Student Support (CASS) and its Executive Committee, both chaired by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies/Dean of the Graduate Division. Contribute to CASS priorities, agendas, committees, and charge.
  • Consult on, provide feedback on and vet policies, programs and processes that intersect with advising and student services, as requested.
  • Liaise with and/or serve on committees such as the Council of Undergraduate Deans, Student Systems Policy Committee, BOA Advising Work Group, SIS Productions/Operations, Colleges & Schools Committee, Future of Work Committee, Undergraduate Enrollment Working Group, Academic Senate's COCI and UGC, etc.
  • Engage with academic units (Colleges, Departments, and professional Schools) that have advising staff in order to support the staff, partner on key issues, and understand the current advising landscape.
  • Engage with administrative units including Graduate Division, People & Culture, Student Affairs, Equity and Inclusion, BIO, and other stakeholders on issues related to advising.
  • Ensure that advising and student services-related systems and technology are governed strategically, in coordination with CASS, RTL, and the IT Governance Committee.
  • Stay current with national trends in academic and co-curricular advising and student support. Work with the Office of the President and other UC campuses to address system-wide issues related to advising. Connect with peer institutions for best practices and collect and disseminate best practices on the Berkeley campus.
  • Amplify the voice of the advising and student services community.


Oversight of Professional Development for Advising Community

Oversee direct report(s) implementing the professional development programming, activities and events for the advising and student services job family.

  • Collaborate with People and Culture's People and Organizational Development unit to maintain Learning Pathways.
  • Working through direct reports, ensure high-quality execution of the campus-wide Equity-Oriented Advising and Coaching program, in collaboration with program consultants.
  • Collaborate with campus units to support retention and engagement of professional advising and student services staff, while seeking to identify and remove obstacles to high performance.
  • Oversee professional development workshops, new advising and student services staff onboarding programs, and advising fellowship program.
  • Oversee recognition initiatives focused on celebrating advisors and student services professionals.
  • Foster a sense of belonging for the advising and student services community and a culture of excitement around developing a career pathway at Berkeley.
  • Engage a continuous learning model to stay abreast of advisor development, theory and practices.
  • Identify emerging needs for advisor training and support and develop strategic plans for addressing them.


Communications

In collaboration with direct report(s), lead communications for advising and student services-related professional development programs and activities and connect advisors with relevant news and updates from across campus. Fine-tune vision for Advising Strategy+ Training website and co-coordinate website updates.

  • Ensure that AS+T serves as a hub of advising and student services-related information, sharing key information across units, and improving communication between divisions that serve students.
  • Direct the work of staff to manage the content of the Advising Strategy + Training website and develop content for the Advising Strategy + Training weekly updates and monthly newsletter, including soliciting contributions from campus advisors and subject matter experts and campus leadership.
  • Ensure that AS+T partners with communications staff across campus to ensure that key audiences are aware of advising-related professional development opportunities and the importance of this area as a strategic priority for the campus.


Assessment and Tracking

Conduct regular needs assessments for the community. Develop mechanisms for using and sharing campus-level assessment instruments and sharing the data and analysis resulting from such instruments, in the absence of clear, comprehensive existing practices.

  • In collaboration with campus assessment specialists and using campus-level assessment instruments (e.g. UCUES, Golden Bear Orientation survey, SONS), track trends and propose advising-related recommendations for improving the student experience. Work with the CTL Executive Director, Vice Chancellors, Vice Provosts, Deans, and Council on Advising and Student Support and other campus leaders on implementation.
  • Assess AS+T programming, e.g., Advancing Practice, the Equity-Oriented Advising and Coaching Program, the Advising Fellows program.
  • Perform regular advising and student services community needs assessments to make strategic enhancements to programming, training and development.


Required Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge and experience working with culturally diverse communities in an academic environment, with pressures encountered by students at a major research university, and with personal and social problems commonly encountered by college students of all backgrounds.
  • Competency in frameworks of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging and demonstrated application.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to assess learning needs and guide development of new training courses.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a consulting role to effect organizational change in a complex organization.
  • Experience working with senior campus leaders and staff at a variety of levels. Ability to exercise discretion, tact and diplomacy.
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, persuasion and leadership, and the ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Significant direct experience with university advising and/or student services work.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • Advanced knowledge of campus academic policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.


Education and Training

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and / or equivalent experience/training.
  • Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, social sciences, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on projects or initiatives with campus-wide impact.
  • Experience with tracking program effectiveness, executing needs assessments, analyzing and concisely presenting survey data, and transforming survey results into recommendations and implementing recommendations across a broad audience.
  • Documented success leading change and implementing improvements.
  • Familiarity with the student information system.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of the field of student advising and adult learning theories and practices.
  • Advanced skills in project management and program implementation.
  • Advanced capability to design and write learning and development materials of highest quality.
  • Proven ability in successfully developing and implementing professional development programs and workshops for staff advisors.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $116,000-$157,400, not to exceed $178,100 annually.
