About the opportunity 

The Director of the Sydney Policy Lab (a pan University multidisciplinary initiative/MDI) is responsible for leading, planning, communicating and achieving the academic and operational vision, strategies and goals of the Sydney Policy Lab, in overall alignment with the University vision and strategy. In doing so, the position leads and enables the values of the representative faculties and University schools in relation to its people and culture.

Sydney Policy Lab is being established to encourage innovative, problem-oriented policy-focused research and the translation of that research to address complex issues in society. It will achieve this through a combination of experimental, edgy and innovative approaches to projects and deeper, longer term work. A distinctive feature of the Sydney Policy Lab is that projects must have an external partner from the policy community, broadly conceived (such as government, NGOs, industry and civil society groups).

Reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Collaborations & Partnerships), you will be responsible for:

- harnessing the outstanding research expertise and breadth at the University by bringing groups of appropriately skilled researchers (academic staff and students) and external partners together in creative ways, and to address some of the biggest and most difficult policy challenges facing Australia and the world today
- identifying and pursuing collaborative projects that position the Sydney Policy Lab as innovative, edgy and impactful in addressing policy challenges
translating research outputs into accessible formats for the policy community to engage with and put into practice
- providing opportunities for students to engage with policy practitioners and industry and work on real-world policy problems
- joining up the policy work within the University wherever possible and showcasing our breadth of research excellence
- driving reasoned public debate in policy areas where the University of Sydney can make a significant contribution, collaborating with our partners
- building relationships with the policy community and positioning the University of Sydney as a leading source of expertise and advice for the policy community, domestically and internationally.

The appointment is full-time, fixed-term for five years, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees to the University. The directorship position may be supported by a continuing reversionary associate professorial/professorial position to be negotiated with the relevant faculty, in line with your disciplinary expertise.
