The Director of Major Gifts will secure major gifts in support of major gift and campaign initiatives outlined by the President’s Council and approved by the Board of Regents. The Director of Major Gifts will manage a portfolio of qualified donors with the goal of helping donors fulfill their passions and interests through their philanthropy to Samuel Merritt University. This position is an externally focused role and local and overnight travel is required.

-Ability to work strategically and independently to achieve annual goals.
-Willingness to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends.
-Persuasive written and public presentation skills.
-Ability to effectively communicate with donors, alumni and high-ranking university faculty and staff.
-Ability to work collaboratively with many different internal and external constituencies.
-Proven major gift cultivation and solicitation experience.
-Proven ability to work as a member of a team.
-Excellent organizational skills and attention to details.
-Computer proficient, experience in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Knowledge and experience with Raiser’s Edge a plus.
Education and/or Experience:
-A minimum of five years of major gifts experience in an academic setting.
-Bachelor’s degree and experience in a university setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
-Ability to perform lifting, pushing and/or pulling which does not exceed 20 pounds is an occasional part of the job.
