Opportunity
The Shintaro Akatsu School of Design is seeking a collegial, visionary leader to serve as Dean to advance the overall quality, reputation and stature of the school. The new Dean provides the strategic leadership to grow the programs, internships and student placement. In addition to their industry and academic experience, this entrepreneurially minded creative professional maintains a wide range of business and design world connections monitoring trends in the industry, creating opportunity and promoting innovation for learning across the School.

The successful candidate demonstrates substantive knowledge, enthusiasm, and capacity for developing and fulfilling a unified vision for SASD consistent with the University's mission. The School is eager to grow its many assets and the Dean is responsible for collaborating with a diverse community of faculty, students, staff and others to achieve these goals. S/he has a proven track record with program development, alumni relations, individual donors, corporations, community partnerships and other stakeholders collaborating with local, state, national and international professional communities. The new Dean will integrate the School and its resources into the greater regional communities while promoting and supporting diverse thinking and inclusivity.

The SASD Dean is the chief academic officer for the School reporting directly to the Provost.

Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Terminal professional degree with professional certification or a PhD
  • Appropriate licensure and professional registration if applicable
  • Blending of experiences in professional practice and academia and an understanding of the changing and evolving landscape of design and its role in business, civic engagement and social responsibility
  • A regional and global vision for SASD and its capacity for creative and interdisciplinary design thinking
  • Ability to collaborate with campus leaders (Admissions, Career Services) to advance interests common to the School and University



Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 10 years professional practice/industry experience
  • At least 3 years academic administrative experience at Chair level or above
  • Background in industrial design, new media, architecture, interior design, graphic design, media arts/animation, or fashion design


Candidates who do not precisely meet the required attributes may demonstrate they have equivalent experiences.

Responsibilities
  • Annually submit an updated plan for the redevelopment of SASD identifying its areas of excellence and potential excellence including but not limited to programs, faculty and facilities.
  • Develop enrollment goals (three years), a resource development plan and a strategy for regional outreach and present to the Provost.
  • Recruiting and retaining distinguished faculty, outstanding students, and talented staff
  • Prepare a proposed operating budget for SASD and monitor all financial transactions relative to same.
  • Oversee and monitor facilities and maintenance for SASD.
  • Recommend to the Provost hiring, reappointment, rank, promotion and tenure of School faculty and advise the Provost on termination recommendations of faculty.
  • Supervise and manage all non-faculty personnel within SASD.
  • Represent SASD on the Provost's Council and other appropriate University committees and insure the full integration of SASD within the University of Bridgeport.
  • Collaborate with other academic units and peers on campus to promote multi-disciplinary initiatives.
  • Approve and assist in developing all public relations and marketing materials relative to SASD as well as establish, together with the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management, enrollment goals and cooperate with that office in achieving them.
  • Provide leadership for SASD in fund-raising and grant writing in conjunction with the University Relations Group, the Office of Sponsored Research and the Institutional Grants Office, and represent SASD at professional, public relations and fund raising events.
  • Contribute and encourage SASD faculty to contribute to the discipline at the national and international levels.
  • Publish, and encourage the SASD faculty to publish, in University, regional or professional publications as is appropriate to your discipline.
  • Serve as the Ex-officio member on all SASD committees (except the School Personnel Committee).
  • Collaborate with the other deans on shared programming, faculty, facilities and other relevant areas.
  • From time to time may be required to travel, including internationally.
  • Be available for other duties as assigned by the Provost or the President.


About the Shintaro Akatsu School of Design
The mission of the Shintaro Akatsu School of Design (SASD) is to offer professional education in the design fields leading to baccalaureate and master's degrees and successful careers in design. SASD develops students' abilities to identify, analyze, and solve design problems using culturally sensitive and environmentally sustainable methodologies and technologies. SASD is committed to advancing the use of best practices in all areas of design. The SASD Design programs are built to emphasize the importance of practical, theoretical, and professional activities and practices in the various design fields.

Computer labs are shared by all design majors with both Windows PCs and Mac OSX for students' preferred platform. Software available includes essential applications such as Auto-CAD, NX, Rhino, Maya, and Solidworks; as well as the complete Adobe suite of Creative Cloud applications including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and others. Interior and graphic design each have specialty labs tailored to those majors.

Design students have access to printing facilities ranging from high-res color laser prints, large format inkjet plotting, and a 3-D printer using ABS plastics, or laser cut in a variety of materials. Traditional model-making, ceramic, and furniture workshops offer students hand-crafting options for visualization, prototyping, and finishing.

SASD has a long history of creating internships and career opportunities for its students and graduates in companies ranging from small independent to Fortune 500 corporations including: Nike, Fisher Price, Ford, Lincoln, Cadillac, LEGO, the Mobile Innovation Lab at IBM, ESPN, Tommy Hilfiger, Burt's Bees, Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Volvo, Jeep, John Deere, NYC Parks, Miller Smith, Assa Abbloy, Save the Children, The Creative Group, Fairfield Interiors, Joe Matto Architects, Gregg Pollack Interiors, AmeriCares, Sikorsky, Johnson & Johnson, Schick, Unilever, LG, Colgate-Palmolive, Pitney Bowes,and BOSE.

Industrial Design students have received scholarships from the Connecticut Space Grant, traveled to NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, TX, and received fellowships at the Pensole Footwear Design Academy in Oregon.
