Puget Sound is a 2,800-student nationally ranked liberal arts college established in 1888 in Tacoma, Washington, a vibrant, diverse mid-sized urban port city. Within, and near, Tacoma there is ready access to urban, rural, and natural areas as well as opportunities to participate in a wide variety of cultural activities. Puget Sound's undergraduate program is based on a core curriculum for all students and includes a wide selection of majors in the liberal arts. The university also provides distinctive graduate programs in education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Puget Sound is also one of just five independent colleges in the Pacific Northwest granted a charter by Phi Beta Kappa.
The Registrar reports to an Associate Academic Dean and is responsible to the faculty for the implementation of the curriculum and for the maintenance and security of student academic records. In addition to the Registrar, the office has eight other fulltime staff dedicated to student records and the student information system (PeopleSoft); services to students involving registration, transcripts, verifications, and athletic eligibility; course and classroom scheduling; proposing the academic calendar for ratification by the faculty; evaluation of academic credentials presented by applicants for admission; the articulation of exam, transfer, and study abroad credit; the evaluation of student academic progress through graduation; and extensive reporting.
The Registrar and the office staff are in a high-contact position with faculty, students, and staff regarding office services as well as academic policy and practice. This expectation is reinforced through membership on the university's Academic Standards Committee and Curriculum Committee. In addition, the Registrar oversees staff with delegated responsibilities on other campus collaborative initiatives such as Student Alert Group, Campus Core, Data Standards, Transfer Advising, and Commencement Planning.
A successful candidate will respect the traditional academic responsibilities of the Registrar's Office at Puget Sound, will have not only the expected excellent management, communication, reporting, and supervisory skills, but will provide an inspirational vision for the future of the office in serving the faculty and students, and in collaborating with other academic and administrative offices. Under the leadership of President Isiaah Crawford, who joined Puget Sound in July 2016, the campus will engage a new strategic planning process in 2017-18, offering opportunity for the next Registrar to play an active role in envisioning and implementing Puget Sound's next generation of achievement.
The Registrar is expected to keep pace with the trends in the profession and it will be vital for the individual to guide the continuing advancement of the office by developing subject matter experts to aid in the adoption of new methods and technologies that are appropriate for Puget Sound. Further, the Registrar is expected to cultivate and maintain professional associations within state, regional, and national associations and will benefit from Puget Sound's status asa national liberal arts college with close ties to other colleges and universities in Washington State and the Northwest Five Colleges Consortium.
Candidates should have at least 5 years of progressively responsible experience within higher education administration with the demonstrated growth and potential to lead the staff and manage the technology necessary for the Registrar's Office to operate. PeopleSoft experience is much preferred; experience with implementing new systems is a bonus.
