The University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks nominations for and expressions of interest in the position of vice chancellor for development and alumni relations.

A major public research university with exceptional undergraduate and graduate programs, UMass Amherst is a vital research enterprise, with a deep commitment to public service and to the Commonwealth. Located in the historic Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, and established in 1863 under the Morrill Land Grant Act, UMass Amherst is the flagship campus of the Commonwealth’s university system. Offering a full range of degrees, its 1,460-acre campus serves more than 22,000 undergraduate students and more than 6,000 graduate students in a rich cultural setting. The campus is a member of the Five Colleges consortium that also includes Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke and Smith Colleges. For the fourth year in a row, UMass Amherst is ranked among the nation’s top 30 public universities by U.S. News and World Report. Please see www.umass.edu

UMass Amherst expects to launch a major fund-raising initiative in the next several years to build upon the success of its recent $379 million campaign, UMass Rising, and to support UMass Amherst’s mission as one of the nation’s leading public research universities. The new vice chancellor will play a critical leadership role working collaboratively across campus with the chancellor, senior leadership, deans and volunteers to plan the campaign, strengthen the organization, expand engagement with the university’s over 265,000 alumni worldwide, and improve fund-raising results. Important partners in these efforts will be the UMass Amherst Foundation Board and the UMass Amherst Alumni Association.

The vice chancellor for development and alumni relations reports to the chancellor of the university, is a member of the university’s senior leadership team, and serves as the executive director of the UMass Foundation. Reporting to the vice chancellor is a team of 150 professionals and support staff distributed among central development programs, alumni relations, research and IT, marketing and communications, and college-based fund-raising units.

UMass Amherst seeks a seasoned senior advancement professional with a broad background building capacity and results, program/personnel leadership experience, and evidence of principal gift fund-raising success. Experience at the leadership level of a comprehensive campaign is essential, as is the ability to lead change in a complex organization. A bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree is preferred. Additional information, including a Leadership Profile, can be found at www.wittkieffer.com.

Inquiries, nominations, and applications should be directed via e-mail to university consultants, Lucy A. Leske and Kim Brettschneider at UMassVCDEV@wittkieffer.com. A candidate should provide a curriculum vitae, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the leadership profile, plus the names and contact information of five references. All inquiries will be treated in confidence, and references will not be contacted without prior knowledge and approval of the candidate. For fullest consideration, applicant materials should be received by February 15, 2018.

  • The University of Massachusetts Amherst is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer of women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities and encourages applications from these and other protected group members.
