Position Summary

Villanova University is organized in a semi-decentralized model, with College based development officers supported by central services. The Director of Major Giving for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) will represent Villanova University and be the primary major gifts fundraiser and chief strategist for CLAS. Primary duties include establishing and managing effective relationships with major donor prospects and existing major donors.

The Director of Major Giving under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Major Gifts and in conjunction with the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will plan and implement major gifts strategies in support of the priorities of the College using operating/work plans and stewardship plans; identify and qualify potential major donors; design and implement successful cultivation and solicitation strategies. The Director of Major Giving will also provide primary and strategic development support to the Dean and Assistant Dean(s) of the College and make discovery and prospect cultivation calls on a frequent basis.

The Director of Major Giving will solicit prospects and identify and motivate those alumni, faculty, volunteers and friends who can advance the development function at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Director of Major Giving will assume stewardship responsibility for prospects visited and is expected to conduct 10-12 prospect visits per month and manage a portfolio of 125 prospects per year, the majority of whom have gift capacity of $100,000 or greater.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Major Gifts: Plans, implements, and evaluates a major gifts plan for CLAS, establishes priorities, activity and revenue goals, and develops relationships and programs to maximize revenue from Alumni, parents, and friends of CLAS. Successfully creates and manages a major gift portfolio of prospects actively bringing them toward major gift closure. Works closely with members of the central development staff to develop a comprehensive giving program for the college. Identifies, cultivates and solicits major gift prospects through face-to-face meetings to increase the level of private support of CLAS.
  • Collaboration with the Dean of CLAS: Supports the Dean with development activities, including travel and meetings with CLAS donors. Works in collaboration with CLAS external relations team responsible for providing high touch to CLASs key external constituents and donors, including oversight of the Deans Advisory Council. Oversees donor stewardship program for the Dean with key donors. Organizes and implements donor events and cultivation activities that include the Dean.
  • Staff Management: In collaboration with the CLAS Dean, the Director manages, motivates and evaluates Major Gifts Officers and a Principal Gifts Officer who, along with the Director, make-up the four person development team in CLAS. Develops major gift strategies and revenue expectations, donor stewardship initiatives and special event plans to be implemented by appropriate staff members.
  • Stakeholder Relations: Actively develops relationships with CLAS faculty and key staff in order to ensure positive internal and external stakeholder experiences and perceptions. Works with the Dean, MGOs, Deans Suite staff, externally focused CLAS faculty/staff, and University Communications to create effective development publications and presentations for CLAS. Develops and submits funding proposals for specific needs within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and on behalf of the Dean.
  • Annual Giving and Planned Giving: Effectively and responsibly manages the development program for CLAS by working closely with the Director of Annual Giving and the Executive Director of Planned Giving in the central development office to ensure that annual giving and planned giving strategies are integrated into overall development mission.
  • Coordinates with the AVP for Major Gifts, Regional Program Directors, and other major gifts officers in the management and strategy of regional gift prospects, in conjunction with the central prospect management system.
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Proven successful experience in individual fund raising required and in acquiring corporate and foundation funding desired. Experience in dealing with major gift prospects required. Commitment to higher education and a strong desire to associate with Villanova University and champion its mission required. Understanding of the University culture and the process for decision making and program development required.
  • Five to seven years experience in fundraising, with at least 3 years in major gifts required. Professional sales experience may be considered as part of overall fundraising experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Comfort level working in a team oriented environment required, but also must be disciplined and result-oriented.
  • Knowledge of general office equipment, including use of lap top computers, required.


Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree preferred.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends required.
