Job Summary
Primary responsibilities of the Executive Associate Dean are to assist and advise the Dean in administration of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Required Qualifications
The Executive Associate Dean is expected to qualify for and will be appointed to the CVM Faculty and may have teaching, research and service responsibilities in addition to the administrative role described above. Therefore candidates must hold professional or terminal degrees in their areas of scholarship (DVM or PhD or their equivalent; a professional degree and post graduate degree and/or specialty certification preferred).

Essential Job Duties
Job Duty
Assist in providing leadership, oversight, and management of the College within the policies and guidelines of WesternU, and the College of Veterinary Medicine, at the behest of the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine by:
Serving as a member of the Dean's Cabinet which serves to advise the Dean on College operations;
Assisting in an ongoing long-term and strategic planning process, including the development of goals and objectives that will ensure excellence in all missions of the College (teaching, research, outreach, and service), will enhance the reputation of the College, and will attract and retain high-quality faculty, staff, and students;
Serving as Ex-officio member of the Faculty Affairs Committee, as a representative of the administration to assure appropriate two-way communication;
Implementing policies and procedures that support the goals of the College and ensuring that the College is in alignment with WesternU and WesternU policies
Assisting the Dean and the Assistant Dean of Business and Operations in oversight of the College's budget; development of plans for allocation and reallocation of funds; allocation of positions (new and open); and assurance of budget efficiencies;
Assisting the Dean in evaluating college metrics and developing appropriate responses to issues derived from the resulting analysis.
Working closely and collaboratively with Curriculum Directors, Assistant Deans, Associate Deans, and Faculty and Staff committee chairs in their leadership and managerial roles involving students, faculty, and staff, by enhancing communications, providing information and guidance on University Rules, ensuring shared faculty governance, and advancing College missions;
Assisting in conducting evaluations of members of the college administration;
Assisting in development, assessment, and oversight of college and department metrics and data;

Percentage Of Time: 50%

Job Duty
Impose the highest standards for appointment, development, promotion, and tenure for College faculty members by:
Providing administrative oversight and management of the faculty and staff recruitment process in close association with the Assistant Dean of Business and Operations. This includes the determination and prioritization of college personnel needs; development of job descriptions; formation of search committees; oversight of the recruitment process; and orientation of new college employees.
Assisting the Promotion and Tenure Committee in evaluation and recommendation of prospective faculty based on assessment of the candidate's scholarly credentials, ability to advance College missions, and compatibility within the College and the academic unit in accordance with university and college faculty by-laws;
Helping negotiate and monitor new faculty salary and startup offers.
Assisting in College professional and leadership development for faculty, staff and students;
Ensuring professional development opportunities, career guidance, and the highest standards for appointment and promotion for employees in the College;
Reviewing recommendations from departmental promotion and tenure committees, coordinating with the College promotion and tenure committee, and assisting with the development of recommendations to the Provost regarding promotion and tenure;
Overseeing faculty development leave by sending requests for review, independently reviewing and ranking requests, and making recommendations to the Dean;
Recommending personnel actions to be taken in faculty-related matters, and in association with the Assistant Dean of Business and Operations staff-related matters;

Job Duty
Advance the College Initiatives and Missions by:
Serving as Director of Diversity and Inclusion, helping ensure a culture of inclusivity, cultural awareness throughout the College, and diversity of faculty, staff, and students;
Assisting the Dean in effectively communicating college accomplishments, plans, and updates of current initiatives to all internal and external college constituents;
Directing AVMA COE accreditation efforts, including preparation of accreditation document, coordination of review process, and coordination of the site team visit;
Creating, implementing, and directing a faculty mentoring program;
Working closely with the Assistant Dean of Business and Operations in creating a staff development program and monitoring staff development;
Assisting in determination of needs for facilities and infrastructure and in their planning and construction;
Assisting with new projects as they arise.

Percentage Of Time: 10%

Job Duty
Represent the College and Dean by:
Effectively interfacing with organizations and groups to further the mission and reputation of the College and Western University of Health Sciences;
Providing backup coverage for the Dean when he/she is unavailable;
Travel to meetings, conferences, and events on behalf of the Dean and the College up to 25% of the time.

The employee must be able to demonstrate appropriate behaviors and physical capacity to work with live animals according to generally accepted professional guidelines (for the individual's professional specialty) that are designed to meet reasonable safety standards in the protection of patients, professional colleagues, staff, and students. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
The employee must be able to travel extensively, at times, when required. The employee may be required to travel (intra-/inter-state; international) for as much as 25% of job effort to deliver the essential functions of the job.

Duties of the Executive Associate Dean are normally performed in a typical office setting. However, depending on individual professional specialty, curriculum duties may require different environmental settings which may include, but is not limited to classrooms, farms, clinical practices, research and academic laboratories, and other off campus settings. Occasionally the employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in this setting is usually moderate due to telephone calls, office equipment, and normal student traffic. Some travel is required and work environment characteristics will change to that of the regional norms.
