Position Summary

In collaboration with the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law (CWSL) Dean and Leadership team, the CWSL Director of Communication and Marketing is responsible for the development and management of strategic communication and marketing efforts, including paid media, presentations, collateral materials, the Web, social media and media relations in the Law School. The Director identifies, assesses and oversees opportunities to ensure that CWSL's key initiatives, key messages and strategic goals are clearly and consistently conveyed to appropriate constituences and stakeholders across a wide range of communication channels. The Director collaborates with CWSL leadership, faculty and staff to assess, identify and develop opportunitites that enhance CWSL's image and reputation as well as support its mission and strategic goals. In addition, the Director supports the University's Media Relations efforts identifying and cultivating opportunities to enhance the Law School's reputation and to promote its programs. The individual selected must have the ability to handle a wide variety of projects in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment with the ability to work evenings, weekends and some holidays as the demands of the job dictate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides the overall development and strategic management of the CWSLs communications and marketing programs. Oversees the implementation of marketing strategies in support of recruitment and admission efforts. Researches, writes and edits across various communication platforms, including print and digital channels to ensure messages properly align with and advance University and CWSLs key messages and strategic objectives. Ensures the successful implementation, coordination and completion of communication projects to meet deadlines and budgets.


  • Establishes and maintains open communication and close working relationships with the Law School leadership team, faculty and staff to develop opportunities for visibility and to enhance the Law Schools image and reputation. Provides specific assistance to the Dean for speeches, messaging, presentations, etc.


  • The Director collaborates with UCMs Media Relations to develop, plan and coordinate a proactive earned media strategy to enhance the Law Schools academic reputation.


  • In collaboration with the Associate Vice President, University Initiatives, serves as the Law Schools liaison to University Communication and Marketing, including Advancement Communication.


  • Attends University/Law School events/functions to assist and/or oversee the coordination of communication efforts.


  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required, preferably in communications, marketing, journalism or a related field.


  • The individual selected must have 5+ years of relevant experience in communications and marketing within an academic, nonprofit or business environment. Higher education experience is highly desired.


  • The individual selected must have an understanding of communication, marketing and media relations strategies, as well as the use of print and electronic communication channels. Must have excellent writing, editing, journalism and strategic communication skills, with a proven ability to oversee a variety of institutional publications. Must have strong communications skills with the ability to maintain excellent internal/external relationships. Experience in issues/crisis management preferred. The individual must be highly proficient in all standard computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat; demonstrated competence in creating databases, utilizing online research, use of technology and new media outlets.


  • The individual selected must have exceptional interpersonal, writing, organization and strategic management skills. Must be flexible, upbeat, energetic self-starter who enjoys collaboration with a wide variety of constituencies. Must have strong communication and decision-making skills with the ability to maintain excellent internal/external relationships. The individual must be highly detail oriented and client service focused. The individual selected must have the ability to handle multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment with the ability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays as the demands of the job dictate. Must have a deep commitment to the well-being of the Villanova University School of Law and the University, a commitment to the Universitys Catholic/Augustinian heritage, the advancement of its mission and to serving the needs of a diverse community.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

  • May need to attend events on nights and weekends or as the demands of the job dictate.
