Associate Vice Provost for Career Services
Johns Hopkins University (JHU), one of the world’s premier research universities, invites applications and nominations for the inaugural role of Associate Vice Provost for Career Services (AVP). This is an exciting opportunity for a visionary leader to create a strategic plan to improve student career readiness, oversee the creation of a more robust and coordinated university-wide employer engagement strategy serving Hopkins undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, as well as design and implement a Shared Services Career Center for the university that will support some of the infrastructure for shared career services operations across the university.
Reporting to Provost Sunil Kumar, the AVP for Career Services will serve in a critical and highly-visible role, working with the Provost and Board of Trustees to develop and implement an over-arching university career services vision, mission, goals, and strategic plan. Reporting directly to the AVP for Career Services will be the future staff within the Shared Services Center and the Homewood Schools Career Center, serving all Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering undergraduate and graduate students, with dotted reporting lines to the Directors for career services offices of other schools within the university.
The AVP will join Hopkins at a time of tremendous momentum and opportunity as the university has embarked on a transformative effort to reimagine career services. Under the leadership of President Ronald Daniels and Provost Kumar, JHU has been deeply focused on a strategic vision to create "One University." In furtherance of that goal, the Student Services Excellence Initiative (SSEI) was launched in 2016 to facilitate cross-divisional collaboration and reduce administrative barriers. As part of the SSEI project, Career Services Directors from around the university have been meeting regularly to conduct an assessment of existing services, identify baseline services and resources that each school/division should deliver to students, identify and implement a common career services management system, and create a collaborative/coordinated Employer Engagement strategy. Based on the Directors’ recommendation, the Provost created the Associate Vice Provost for Career Services position to oversee vision and implementation of the strategy going forward.
The ideal candidate will be a committed and experienced professional who has thrived in complex, highly demanding, fast-paced environments of excellence where expectations for performance and productivity are high. S/he will have experience in career services and/or bring a deep familiarity with trends and challenges in the field as relevant to both undergraduate and graduate students. The AVP should bring a record of successful leadership, consensus-building, and an ability to build sustaining and effective relationships with faculty, staff, university leadership, and employers.
