Starting Salary Range: $90,000-$110,000/annually. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Involves advising on intellectual property (IP) rights protection, business startup and other technology transfer related issues. Evaluates the commercial potential of research results, obtains and manages the appropriate IP rights protection, markets inventions and software, and / or biological / tangible materials; drafts and negotiates, and manages IP licenses and Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), and advises on IP terms in research and collaboration agreements. Supports companies who wish to sponsor research and / or license technologies. Facilitates administration of federal and state laws regarding research, conflict of interest, IP, contracts and employment. Works with outside patent attorneys to file patent applications.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research (IATC), the Industry Agreements Officer will draft and negotiate complex research collaboration agreements with industry partners. The Officer will manage the full spectrum of industry agreements and related management transactions. The Officer will work closely with the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) with regard to intellectual property policy matters and with various campus units for related administrative issues. The Officer will have delegated signing authority for UCSC industry research agreements.

The Industry Agreements Officer must be adaptable, dynamic, enthusiastic, energetic and ready to do what the task requires to ensure UCSC meets and exceeds the expectations of its stakeholders. Must be a business professional who has significant experience in the development and negotiation of contractual agreements, a strategic thinker and self-driven, and has a strong understanding of the fundamentals of patent and copyright law. This position would be of interest to someone who wishes to work in contract development and administration at a not-for-profit, technology commercialization organization and be involved in a complex, dynamic and diverse environment.

The Industry Agreements Officer is a professional who uses skills as a seasoned, experienced intellectual property / technology licensing / transfer professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organization policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

The office of Industry Alliances & Technology Commercialization (IATC) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) is part of the Office of Research. We are responsible for the administration and management of intellectual property (IP), licensing and commercialization.

IATC Objectives

1. Expand the UCSC IP portfolio in research areas that currently have high commercial interest or societal benefit, have not historically engaged IATC, or are significant research strengths for UCSC

2. Increase the number of opportunities for UCSC students and faculty to collaborate with a wide spectrum of industry partners

3. Accelerate the commercialization of innovations resulting from UCSC research through licensing and startups benefiting the local economy

4. Increase UCSC revenue from industry-sponsored research and IP licensing

Qualifications include:

A four-year Bachelor's degree in related area.

Law degree (JD) or equivalent significant experience in drafting and negotiating legal agreements.

At least five years of contract development, negotiation and administration.

At least five years of experience in negotiating technology/research agreements.

At least two years working with intellectual property in a university technology transfer office.

Selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
