Director - Accessibility Services

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time


Utah Valley University is seeking an individual who can lead the Accessibility Services department with great passion, commitment, and purpose. The director of the Office of Accessibility Services supports the UVU mission by providing vision, leadership and strategic direction for a wide array of disability programs, services and initiatives that enhance the capacity of students, faculty and staff. Directs and develops innovative and best practice functions for the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS).

The director is responsible for the overall management, direction and long-term development of the Office of Accessibility Services. The director evaluates the office and organization of programs and staff responsibility, relations with student clientele, faculty and academic departments, assistive equipment needs and communication which includes an accessible and comprehensive website. Supervises the provision and accessibility counseling services to students regarding post-secondary disability accommodation applicable under Federal/State law, including but not limited to The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended.

The director also has fiduciary responsibilities and provides administrative oversight, guidance and accountability for the Office of Accessibility Services. The director must develop, implement, and interpret offices goals, priorities and policies.

The director will be responsible for determining eligibility, ensuring the appropriate level of accommodation and ensuring that students with identified and documented disabilities have equal access to all programs, services and activities at Utah Valley University.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a doctorate in special education, school psychology, vocational rehabilitation, vocational/educational counseling, social work or related field AND two years of administrative/supervisory experience OR a master degree as described above and four years of experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the Summary of Duties of the position, one year of which must have been administrative and/or supervisory. Must have an active certification and/or license related to the education listed above.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • In depth Knowledge of Sections 503, 504, and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973), the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990), and other Federal and State regulations affecting services for students with disabilities, as well as academic and legal case law trends
  • Knowledge how to interpret and apply case laws and liability issues to students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of assessment instruments often included in documentation from appropriate licensed professionals, DSM IV, and ICD 10.3.
  • Knowledge of counseling, academic advising, vocational rehabilitation, and resources on/off campus.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of the medical, psychological, social and treatment aspects of individuals with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislation related to people with disabilities.
  • Skill with the review and documentation of educational, psychological, medical, learning disabilities, career, and vocational diagnostic information.
  • Skill in identifying, evaluating, and utilizing available resources to serve individuals with disabilities.
  • Interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to supervise a diversity of personnel.
  • Ability to develop and manage a budget.
  • Ability to utilize technology devices software applications.
  • Ability to write grants, funding requests, and/or business proposals.
  • Ability to utilize computer applications and appropriate departmental and campus databases.
  • Ability to analyze and summarize quantitative and qualitative data from assessment reports and institution information.
  • Ability to present information to large groups (student, staff, faculty and/or community members).

Physical Requirements:

Requires general office environment such as sitting for extended periods of time, walking, talking, seeing, hearing, fine hand manipulation and ability to lift up to 10 lbs.

Pay Range: $48,117 - $64,157
